Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

We had a whole week of it. Sucked beyond belief. I didn't boil much though. I was too paranoid. The whole town bought the Jewel out of bottled water and jugs, myself included.

So it's only been since Wednesday that we've had a chance to get in there.

And, of course, nobody on earth would have factored in the time it took to practically SHOOT our way in there.

And why won't anybody say that if these people had evcauated in the first place, we wouldn't be wasting all this time moving them around?

Any excuse the officials of New Orleans and Louisiana give is unacceptable.

they won't need a bond issue. the federal government is going to pay for everything. the city of new orleans no longer exists as a government agency. can they collect any taxes, I guess all their public employees are unemployed (except police)? who pays them now? why do we need public school teachers in new orleans now, when the schools are underwater?

What strikes me is that on Saturday or Sunday (I think it was Sunday but someone will correct me if I'm wrong), the mayor and the Governor called for a mandatory evacuation. Less than 24 hours before the storm struck.

And they only did that because, as they admitted in their 10:30 press conference, the president called and pressed them to order a mandatory evac.

.........

that is all correct!

3. From a political standpoint, I don't think anyone who looks at the situation objectively would even want to see New Orleans rebuilt. This is mainly because from this point forward it could only function as a massive public works project that turns into a city in which the government owns 100% of the land. Just think about this for a moment . . . the most far-reaching implication of this disaster is that land titles in a city below sea level are basically worthless. This means that no prudent investor will ever buy a piece of property, no bank will ever extend a mortgage without extensive government guarantees, and no insurance companies would underwrite a property/casualty policy in a rebuilt New Orleans.

What about building homes on stilts, as is done in other hurricane-prone areas?

The New York Slimes is slamming the president in tomorrow's edition.

Sigh...what else is new?

But the truly weird thing is, the former-and-never-again-to-be-president
is SUPPORTING Mr. Bush against his critics.
Never thought I'd see that.

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/02/politics/02bush.html

EXCERPT:
Mr. Clinton, who has become politically close to the Bush family in the last year, was the most prominent Democrat to defend Mr. Bush against the accusations of slowness.

Asked about the federal response in an interview on CNN, Mr. Clinton said that he understood why the refugees living in "hellacious conditions" in the New Orleans Superdome felt the way they did, "but the people that put them there did it because they thought they were saving their lives, and then when the problems showed up, they had a lot of other people to save."

I don't understand how they keep blaming the levees on the Government... we are spending millions to put in a sewer system we didn't want but because we all live near the lake and this is only because the Feds say we HAVE to do so... and they are not paying for it, we local taxpayers are paying for it.... and it hurts! Doubled water bill, connection fees keep going up the longer this goes on, etc.

"We are not taking these fine Americans to trash a sports arena. Think of it as triage. It takes a little time to determine all of the needs. High priority is getting people back to a routine. School, medical care, and such. Not to worry, we will not send our fellow southern "dregs" to invade pristine Iowa. Would not want the Hawkeyes to have to deal with Americans that have a different skin color, and speak with a drawl. Let us all just cram them into tents in 105 degree heat. Read your quote. Dispicable."

Well they have trashed one already and shot at those trying to help them.

Its fine to take them there short term, but people better realize this is not short term.

Hawkeyes? Well that I agree with on, they are despicable.

A different skin color, How do you know what skin color I have? You are foolishly making assumptions.

105 degree heat. Did you realize that our men in the middle east air condition their tent/temporary facilities?

Get off your high horse, someone needs to take care of these people; they aren't going home next week. Sports arenas just wont cut it
They will be in temp housing at Christmas time.

The doc who was on with Greta said that the stench of feces and urine is overwhelming. How is it that Nagin and Blanco didn't have a major shelter plan for this city for any possible flooding issues, a very distinct possibility given their sub seal level location, until Katrina?? And, then it was the Shelter of Last Resort. Unfathomable ... all their lives, they've been surrounded everywhere by water and the known risk of hurricanes.

Agreed. Blending fuels was a start. Suspending Taxes should be done as well just to alleviate some of the pricing.

And I sure hope Hannity understands by tomorrow that politics are being forced on us here, and he needs to accept the reality to respond in kind.

The jury is still out on whether you know what you're talking about, but IMO you've been defending the press far too much.

please back off...

Just a small point of order: I have no need to back off, as I am not posting to you.
