Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

the commercial and tourist sections will be rebuilt first. the rest of the town, the poor neighboorhoods, will be rebuilt incrementally over time with HUD money. probably $1 of construction and $9 of politcal graft for every $10 committed. its going to make the Big Dig look like a picnic.

I have seen some wonderful human beings in some of those clips, people that I would love to sit down and get to know. Listening to some of the elderly women and their faith, the gentleman that was carrying out his neighbor's kids one at a time, these things give me hope.

Parts of our society have lost their moral compass. I suppose I should not blame them. They have been taught by our society that there is no right and wrong. They were taught to be selfish, to look out for number one. They are caught up in a way of life that strips that same character that gives me hope and leaves them diseased: less than human in a way.

It is not their race that is showing through, it is their lack of a soul. In my system of beliefs, I know that they have one, but they have stilled that small voice that tells them right from wrong and only look out for themself.

I must ask myself some questions. How can the same society, living in the same circumstances cause such different sorts of behavior? If we believe the more modernisitic view, they have the same environment, social status and circumstances. Why are they not all Clarence Thomases or looters?

The Left's way of thinking divides people by their class, by their circumstances. If they are right, then there can be no rising above the rest. They believe that these people must be given everything, that they cannot do for themselves. I believe that the Left are the ultimate racists.

After that was posted and discussed on CNN (that the windows on the bus with the broken a/c didn't open), a cop was interviewed on CNN who was at the Astrodome.

He was asked about that bus and he said the a/c broke down on the bus and the evacuees were transferred to another bus (presumably with working a/c).

OK folks I may just not understand this.

Why is it so logistically hard to load up some C-130's with water and food, and parachute it in by the Super Dome? They can get the supplies from Walmart, Publix, Kroger etc... Just clear a little area where the choppers land. I use to see it in the military we would drop vehicles, artillery. Why can't we do food?

Perhaps we are just looking at the efficiency of Government, and it does not matter how much taxes you pay. Oh one more point I am sure the terrorist are taking notes...

I wish they would employ the regular army for equipment and manpower to help with the work of removing debris, etc."

In the perfect world, I agree. Let the guys in green in there with top authority right from the start, and the place will be milspec within the week, looters yessir yessir yessiring up a storm.

That can't happen in a vacuum though, and the powers that be decided they want to run things their way.

Regular military personnel have already been deployed. The amphibious assault ship USS Bataan is already on station off the coast of LA, loaded with helicopters to support search and rescue ops. Special forces boat crews are on their way from Florida (I believe these are NG or Reserve Units; all volunteers). The USNA hospital ship Comfort will leave its port in Maryland on Sept. 3rd arriving off the NO coast about Sept. 10th with hospital staff from Maryland, making a stopover in Florida to pick up additional medical personnel. This ship staffed by a maritime crew and medical personnel can deploy in five days when necessary. Here is a link to a story on the Hospital Ship deployment. http://www.news.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=19867

Someone said on another thread that state troopers or other law enforcement personnel from one state could not be used in enforcement duties in another state. This is not true in a disaster/emergency situation such as this. If a local magistrate agrees they can be deputized immediately for a period of time and put to work, but they must report to & be directed by the chain of command in the hosting municipality or state.

Honestly, I think perhaps they can only handle 5000 or so in one given spot without problems developing.
