28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.
Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."
Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.
The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Ha. Funny. I did try tho! I was fired up.
I'm not sure if they can leave the superdome. I will ask next time I talk to him.
Saw Shep this afternoon and asked this guy from the Dome what was going on. He elaborated about the fifthy conditions then said I heard that. At this point Shep shut him off. Wanted just the facts. That's good reporting.
More than likely there is no "daddy" that was ever present in the first place, just a sperm donor. The government is their "daddy".
It's a lifestyle that our elected officials should be ashamed of because they created it. Keep people stupid and dependent on them to keep getting elected. It's criminal! It's been going on for GENERATIONS!
Plenty of evidence of "armed thugs" there. All you gotta do is wait for permission from the mayor, and try not to get too excited when they drop food and water and you'll be fine.
Alright, wiseguy. I shoulda said the American flag with the 13 stripes, blue field size, etc.
The BIG problem is that the Texas star takes up so much :)
I've called the humane society to offer my help with boarding a pet (dog) or two for the evacuees, I've been gathering up some supplies and my dd's school is putting together care packages tomorrow to be shipped in the afternoon.
I wish I could do more but my dh is out of the country and I've got the kiddos to care for. I may check on a babysitter and see if there is a shelter I can help at for a few hours at a time.
Thanks for providing this information for us all!
And our side has GOT to get better at playing the "feel good" game. It is sickening--but style is, in politics--as important as substance. Especially because perception--in this media driven world--is as important as reality.
I'm amazed anyone is still alive in his parish, since Katrina's eye went right over them at near CAT 5 strength. The aerial photos look like the whole place is underwater.
Oh no! I'd much rather vote for the party that created the mess at the SD. The party that created the entitlement welfate state mentality of looting, rape and murder. The party of no personal responsibilty. The party of no planning and no foresight. The party that doesn't understand that we are a republic and that there is a chain of command in the face of disaster that starts at the local level.
Yup! The ineptness, inability and unwillingness of the democrats to shoulder any responsibility, for a creation of their own making, sure makes me want to register D come the next election. /extreme, dripping, bitter sarcasm
As do we all my friend. (Though, mines a bit more calculated then most since I am stockpiling supplies, and don't live in the hills that burn year after year ;-)
If asked by the Governor or the legislature the President could enact the "Insurrection Act" and send in the armed forces to keep the peace. If that is not done, then armed forces are prevented from "enforcing state laws" by posse comitatus.
NG on the other hand, are under the command of the Governor of the State and they along with local police and state police can enforce law.
I heard Blanco say today that law officers coming from other states would be deputized in LA, therefore making them able to enforce the law.
Ping me if they find him, ok?
You go girl, and thank you, I had not even had the chance to send them an email! Here's to hoping that the Snowball story will have a happy ending!
I heard some guy interviewed complain how bad the food was in the dome!
Clinton, Reid - that's just cover for them. the battle lines are drawn here, its about time our side dropped the "let's not politicize this" baloney. we never learn, the Dems will twist any issue to their advantage.
Understand the logistics of carrying all required supplies in, but they WERE told.
