28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.
Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."
Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.
The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

There are a lot of dogs I would rather sit next to on a 5 hour bus ride to Houston. I wouldn't have left without my pets either, especially if my fat-assed governor, mayor and senators were living it up and telling me how to "ride it out".

An article I read a few years back suggested families get in the habit of going one day without TV or computers at least once a week.
Have everyone, kids included, spend the day reading or doing outside activities. Even get out the checkerboard games. Play kick the can, etc.
They said Americans need to be prepared mentally, emotionally, etc. for what hardships we might need to endure if major emergencies happen -- coping without TV and computers for extended periods of time, maybe days or weeks.
Oops...some group should have updated their programming to reflect current events.

Seriously though, I do drink heroic quantities of water, being cursed with virulent perspiration glands. When we were moving our daughter & son-in-law the other week, I went through six shirts, each one so wet that there was nary a dry spot on it, and could easily have wrung out a glass of salt water, each. It's so bad, I offend even myself.

This is a terrible thing. I saw a woman today on TV who was being carried out of the SD. She was so severely dehydrated that she was seizing and I didn't think she was going to make it. She may have had
other medical problems, I don't know. But overall it's clear that many people are in very fragile condition now.

Denny Hastert said that NO shouldn't be rebuilt where it is at below sea level and the Governor threw a hissy fit. Not safe to be out on the streets of NO as cops are walking off the job and FEMA suspended search and rescue operations by boat this morning because they were being shot at. IOTW, pretty much the same lawlessness as last night.
Forgot some doctor that was interviewed and won't go back to the Super Dome said that some of the hoodlums causing the trouble are on buses to TX.
It is getting really bad for some people left in NO who I pray can get out, but I cannot feel sorry for the looters and other hoodlums roaming around even if Jesse Jackson now says the sniping shots were overplayed. BTW, JJ is now in LA.
That about sums it up in a quick synopsis.
