28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.
Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."
Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.
The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

That could be. I posted a link earlier today from a Russian news source that said we turned them down, but it may have been that we said not right now.
Did the Senate vote?...MSNBC has breaking news that they passed the 10.5 billion...
Live from LA police scanner.
NG reports the OPD and State Police are "off the scene".
National Guard calling for reinforcement. "Volitile" situation leading people up ramp by the Hyatt to board buses.
Complains that LA State police LNO disappeared in the afternoon and has not returned. NG requests that higher in command at state level increase levels of law enforcement.
As I recall from a previous thread, they just walked off the job.
It was a very strange situation back in the 50's. Legalized discrimination had to stop, which was a good thing, and for a while it looked like we were all going to move forward. Then came LBJ's "Great Society," which took some of the patronizing programs that were already being put in place by liberals in Northern cities (for example, dropping the requirement that residents of the projects be (a) employed and (b) married) and made them national policy.
This was the death blow to a group that was struggling. Blacks who had moved out of the Deep South were illiterate, unintelligible even to other black people, and scared. Once the government and the non-profits got ahold of them, they were dead meat. And this spread throughout almost all groups of poor urban blacks. It was the start of what is now almost 50 years and 3 generations of dependency, resentment and failure. Thank you, liberals.
They found Fats, they are all okay.
our side has better be ready on this politically. its coming. we are always on defense, we had better get on offense and start making Blanco the fall gal, and talk about how Bush had to ask for the evacuation order of NO.
Don't think so.
He's just repeating what the rest of the House is hearing from their constituents.
Seriously. Nobody but the folks from NOLA think it is a good idea. No more so than rebuilding in the path of Mt. Saint Helens.
That is because the police weren't allowed to shoot when this crap started
"I hope you know that so many of us are heartbroken watching this."
It breaks my heart too. I am so worried about the people who are still waiting for help, with no water and no food. It's the saddest thing I've ever seen in my life.
I can't imagine the fear and pain all those people are feeling. Prayers for all.
I remember it well. Blanco said "bring peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and pray"
Which is why they ignored anything & everything President Bush told them to do regarding evacuations?
Bright move that. /sarc
Translation--Chuckie has heard from moveon.org, Kos and DU and assures them they will launch a full scale get Bush campaign in a few days or weeks.
Freeper? I challenge you to help anyone that needs help, please........
Exactly!!!
I may have some of the details confused, but he seemed to be referring both to the situations at his hosp. and at the Dome.
They were not rescued for days .. they were on their own, had to devise their own security, food, water systems, etc.... just ungodly. He said people were trying to break into their ICU unit.
He had been at the Dome, and I believe he said that last night, there were several murders, 6 rapes, and a suicide there .. just mind boggling horror.
He was SO thankful to the Lafayette Fire Dept.. apparently there was a fire (must be at the hospital), and they somehow got it extinguished. He was also so grateful for some 14 yr. old kids in flat boats .. who finally came by and realized people there needed help. They took him with 2 patients in a flatboat out to an airboat so the patients to get to another hospital.
His last statement: I won't be going back to the Dome.
The Chicago fire and Hiroshima were not natural disasters that happen on a regular basis. San Francisco, on the other hand...well that's got a lot of potential to be. I keep hearing warnings about how the big one is coming, just like here. I'm not opposed to rebuilding; I just don't want to see history repeat itself and this one seems to be more likely than the others.
Scarborough has about 175,000 viewers. He's using his experience in Florida WHERE THE ROADS WERE PASSABLE. He's just a dumbass.
"To: jeffers
This whole thing was unrealistic. Why wasn't the Superdome being stocked, at least with water, from the very first moments? I heard on the first day that the NG had brought MRE's with them when they
arrived at the shelter, but the city and state had clearly not laid in any other stock.
I think the SD was a last-minute choice when they realized that the storm was actually going to hit. No preparation, no stocks, no plans.
"
You have to open your view an order of magnitude to see this clearly. The city was expecting 35,000 people at the dome. That's 35,000 gallons of water.
Four semi-tractor trailer tankers.
Per day.
