28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.
Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."
Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.
The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

"To: MarMema
And now people are apparently leaving the Superdome and taking their chances in the streets of NO. Between those two choices what would you take. I guess you might think it was safer on the streets of
NO. But it sounds like even the police are giving up. "
The police have been going into NDP (night defensive positions) for at least two days now, with significant firefights for control of their positions, but the MSM is just now picking it up. As I see it, the police have been essentially abandoned by their command structure, some officers going 24 hours without communication from higher authority. They are doing what they can, doling out resources, including food and ammunition, accomplishing what is possible.
I said this morning that this will be resolved, win or lose, in 24 hours and it will. If the cops can hold the line through tonight, the Feds have till tomoroow to have enough ammo, rifles and warm bodies in there to stem the tide of rising violence. I don't think the cops will last another night after this one, if they last that long.
She wasn't too concerned when they were looting gun stores..

Hastert has already issued a "clarification".
Air drops wouldn't do much with armed thugs around. They'd just confiscate the goods.
I heard a woman at the Convention Center say that some of the thugs that had looted groceries, etc. were selling water to the people for $5 a bottle.
Louisiana State Police at the Hyatt/bus load zone in N.O. is AWOL
LOL...yeah, I heard that...IOW's we have plenty of time to blame Bush later..
Dr. Badin bringing up that these people need Chest Xrays for TB.
I know the rules but Snowball must have been small and made it thru the shelter. They have turned their heads for so much. Could they just have not seem him too?
Does anyone know where the little boy went or his name?
Do you remember the weather report before the thing hit, and all of the NO local mayor and emergency management director said that this whole thing was "alarmist?"
That's why they put the people in the Superdome and told them to bring their own food and water. And what is amazing is that it was the poor who voted for these people...and this is the treatment they get? To be caged up like animals in a place that is certainly going to be demolished with little or no provisions?
They could have bussed people to Baton Rouge, could've been a bit more inventive. But no. And now the political backpeddling begins. Blame George Bush, Denny Hastert...whoever. Now there is anarchy complete with rapes, thievery, murders...this is unbelievable. "Alarmist," my eye. Katrina was a category 5 headed for an area that KNEW that it couldn't withstand a 3...what's alarmist about that?
Prayers going up for the police trying to hold out.
"that to secure these rights governments are instituted among men...."
Life, liberty and the persuit of happiness. Precisely my point.
Understand and agree. However for something like this if a few emails to an animal group will help I'm all for a bit f typing. I can't do much but sit here at the computer and offer my home to kids in need so I'll do whatever I can.
Badin just brought up psychiatric medicine. OH Boy, I hadn't even thought about that. You have people without the meds that might have kept them in line.
It is sad fact, but it is true. Unless we change our system of Government we end up living or dying by the idiots or good guys that are elected. Good reason to know how good your Mayor is in a crisis and how good his underlings are in a crisis.
Is he trying to compete with CNN's Cafferty? I e-mailed Cafferty my displeasure with his obviously biased reporting. Don't imagine he cares a whit about what I think--but sure made ME feel better!
Glad to hear it!
Somebody replied along the way and said he had checked in and made a statement that he was well and had left ahead of the storm.
No preparation...perhaps the Mayor did not want to frighten the tourists?
/extreme sarcasm off
