Warning As Mobs Get Bolder
The New York Post ^ | September 1, 2005 | Kevin McGill

NEW ORLEANS — Mayor Ray Nagin ordered 1,500 police officers to leave their search-and-rescue mission last night and return to the streets to stop looting that has turned increasingly hostile as the city plunges deeper into chaos.

"They are starting to get closer to heavily populated areas — hotels, hospitals — and we're going to stop it right now," Nagin said.

The number of officers called off the search-and-rescue mission amounts to virtually the entire police force in New Orleans.

The out-of-control thievery had escalated while cops joined National Guardsmen in focusing on saving lives.

In some cases, New Orleans police officers took part in the looting. One cop was seen carting off a computer and a 27-inch flat-screen TV, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Earlier yesterday, Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blan- co said she has asked the White House to send more people to help with evacuations and rescues, thereby freeing up National Guardsmen to stop looters.

The looting got worse as people brazenly ran- sacked stores for food, beer, clothing, appliances — and guns.

There have been some citizen-vs.-criminal standoffs, with one shopkeeper posting an ominous sign: "You loot, I shoot."

So damn what? In that case, the merchandise belongs to the insurance company, not the looters!!

"You loot, I shoot."

It really is the only solution.

Some of the thugs have AK-47's and I'm sure they took all the ammo they could carry.

Call out of the National Guard, ISSUE them ammo, ROE - looters get shot. It will all stop within 24 hours...

Here's a scary scenario, my friends. In the last 36-48 hours looters have raided gun shops throughout the city. They have weapons and ammo.

That is just an excuse to steal items that have nothing to do with survival.

"If I remember correctly, during the riots in LA. the Korean grocery store owners sat on the roofs of their buildings daring anyone to try and loot them"

Your memory serves correctly!

Speaking as an outside observer, to me he seems to come off like Winston Churchill next to that Governor..

That could be true but it is not saying a lot.

Maybe Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton...

Until there is a speaking fee and other money to be had, these two will not be visiting New Orleans.

Isn't most of the stuff being "looted" already paid for by the fat insurance settlement the storeowner has probably already filed?

Wow, charming to see the looters' mentality and logic displayed here on FR.

Looting--Hell, I thought this was a story about the price per barrel that was artificially high all freakin summer. Or Atlanta gas stations charging over $5 per gallon of gas making profit off someone else's pain and need.

PS. All the gas distributors bought the current lot of oil contracts at less than $60 per barrel back in the day.

Oh, you mean *I'm* paying for these looted items in my next insurance bill? How generous of you. Grrr.

Some freepers defended the looting.

I did but I have come back to my senses now. I do think taking the food would be ok considering the situation. I guess I was having a liberal moment since I am surrounded by them here at work...............

Yep.
This is the real world now. Talk is BS, action is needed.
The savagery of the human is on display.
I'm slightly disappointed that we haven't landed more Fed troops in the area to totally take over. There is probably a reason, but a heavy handed presence is needed yesterday.
Some ornery, well armed Marines would seem to be appropriate.

Oil speculators are having a field day as the false panic is installed to gouge frantic customers at the pump.

Even after 9/11 the price to buy an American flags went way up and eventually came back down to normal and demand leveled off.
