All Earthquake List for World Address:http://earthquake.usgs.gov/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_all.html
Got a swarm going on in Southern Cali.
Is this worthy of discussion and a earthquake list ping BD476?
I am avid at checking daily and this swarm caught my attention.
California?
Earthquakes?
Naaaah.
What exactly does it mean? Does a "swarm" indicate that a big one is coming? I thought that a bunch of small earthquakes could relieve tension and thus prevent a large one.
Don't worry...I know what I'm doing. Heck, the last time I did this sort of thing was May 6, 1937 at Lakehurst, New Jersey, and nothing bad happened then, right? ...right?
Why are y'all lookin' at me so funny?

OPINION: Well, from a almost all my life living in California, those little quakes look like they are letting off some steam
I pray that we don't have a big quake right now*. There is enough going on in U.S. whithout adding to the situation.
* Not that I ever want to have a quake to devastate CA.
Swarm.
I've been watching this one today, too. Interesting.

1) Seismic swarms are common in California, and they are almost never followed by large earthquakes.
2) Small quakes don't relieve tension to prevent large quakes. It would take over 30,000 Magnitude 4 quakes to release the same energy of a Magnitude 7 quake.
Other thing is this exact area has had these swarms before several times in recent years.
I see what you mean.

Southeast shore of the Salton Sea, 4.6, 4.5, 4.5, 4.3, and many smaller.
I'll go loot my neighbor's apartment.
I grew up there.
I was doing my usual A.M./P.M. USGS check and the back to back list of S.Cali caught my eye.
I am use to a list like this for Alaska.
I will take a ribbing/flame if I am being stupid.
Then this thread can die a queit death.
Little ones are usually a good thing.
JMO and that is extremely novice.
Thank you for the ping, Oceanperch. That's a lot of quakes for just one area.
That's it!
Just happen to be on/near you know what. /tin foil
WHAT did I tell you earlier, young man?
Huh?
HUH?
:)
