President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

The government sure as hell picked a great time to start following its own laws. If the government can ignore immigration law, why can't the ignore this one?

Blanco says no shooting in the dome. People were screened for guns before they went in. People in the dome are calm and hopeful now.

I didn't say that and I haven't seen it. But they were locking down the Dept of REv for a reason, not for precautions from what I hear. And things are tense at the River Center. People in and out, lots of cops, hostile crowd.

I wish you were right for all rumors. I really do.

Level of water in NO has dropped about 2 feet. Driving piles to isolate breech from the Lake. Second breech..water flowing from breech back to Lake. Things looking up ..except for the water already in the city.

Optimistic news!? Wrong thread buddy!

This IS a dry run for CA and NYC and DC and . . .

After the '89 Loma Prieta quake here in CA, we soon realized that, for the first 48 hours or so, we were on our own, could not or should not count on any "government" to help us make it through.

We all have emergency kits on hand, as we did before, because we know it will happen again. I cannot believe that those living in the Gulf Coast states, who get ample warning for hurricanes, would not be prepared, take no repsonsibility for their own welfare, and expect others to do it for them.

"Receiving tons and tons of rumors of hospital takeovers. Sent SWAT teams 2 and three times and found nothing!"

For those who are new to scanner listening, remember that just because you hear a report of something which may be happening and hear officers dispatched it does not mean the event will be substantiated or that circumstances are as originally reported.

We need to be especially diligent at this time to not run with rumors which may make things more difficult for law enforcement, rescue, and emergency personnel. All of us are hungry for info, but let's attempt to remain objective until things are confirmed. Free Republic is a widely read site.

Gee, well excccuuuuuseee me.... From my vantage point, The President's response to this has been thoroughly incompetent from day 1. >{? My gosh, what a dim-bulb post. Bush has been on top of this since before the storm struck, and the feds have done remarkable things since. So by my count he's been thoroughly competent since at least day minus 2.

Stop your whining.

I have it on now. It's kind of running. You can see the military trucks in the middles of the street. I can't copy the pic though. I wanted to post it but media player doesn't have a copy thing or I just don't know how to use it.

Chertoff is another clueless government wonk.

I've only heard good things about Chertoff, although I shuddered when he said "Katarina" in his opening remark today.
