President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Sheesh......what next ??
I thought I saw a picture yesterday of inmates standing on a highway overpass being guarded by police/deputies/ NG, whoever drew that deatil. I have heard the other story, too, so maybe both are true. Maybe the let out the less serious offenders and kept the most dangerous under guard.
Also trying to clear causeways . . . don't know if it's people or junk they're trying to clear . . .
MOST WELCOME. GOD BE WITH YOU AND YOURS.
Last night, I saw huge huge group of men in orange jump suits...wrist-banded to each other by water/river.....police standing guard.
I also heard a reporter say that a hotel told them, the hotel patrons, to "get out" because the prisoners were being released and there would be no one to protect them from them and the other elements come dark...they were told that on Tuesday night I believe.
"Priority #1: clear the causeway"
That would be a good idea.
It has been proposed before but why not use assets that we already have.
Plenty of empty base housing that could and should be utilized.
Dialup users could set your prefs to 20 or so to display. It works fine. I am on dialup and have no problem keeping up as long as we don't put graphics here.
Ping me too please
Most military housing and dorms are officialy classified as substandard for civilian use but OK for the military.
Thank you so much!
I'm going there now to read.
Crowds growing . . . tempers starting to rise . . . heats building up . . . not sure where

I heard officials from the Parish Prison discuss how they had gotten the jailed people taken to another prison. They did herd them on a ramp of the interstate while getting them out of town, but they were always under guard.
I did hear a reporterette on Fox last night say that at least some prisoners were let out and at that point the police told the reporterette to evacuate because "we can't protect you".
