President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

the media (at least Fox) has left NO - we're not going to get much information now except for scanners and stuff so keep up the good work

I'm sure you're right. At least for now CNN has Chris Lawrence reporting on the ground in New Orleans.

It just means that the disorder is New Orleans is very odd. This would not normally occur.

The WSJ today has a story about some other major American disasters. According to the story, there was a lot of lawlessness after the 1871 Chicago fire (a contemporary account: "The city is infested with a horde of thieves, burglars and cutthroats, bent on plunder, and who will not hesitate to burn, piillage and even murder, as opportunity may seem to offer them to do so with safety.") and the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. (In both cases, martial law was imposed.)

And at this point there's nothing the looters could steal that's worth an officer's life. However, once the reinforcements have arrived,

What are they going to do with a bunch of stolen goods? Take them with them on rescue boats? Sell them to other looters? I don't get it.

I have always been aware of gang violence.

However, I have always associated it with kids like from the West Side Story or Dead End kids.

These new gangs are nothing but immoral, no pity thugs willing to do what ever it takes to get what ever they think is owed them by society.

These people are basically not redeemable and have no good use in a civilized society.

They are like the terrorists Muslim thugs terrorizing the world.

Death is the final and best end result for these folks.

Gov. Huckabee has OFFERED to relocate these people to the closed Ft. Chafee Arkansas. It would be the best place to relocate a city of homeless people.

sl, thought you might be interested in this info.
