President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Ya know?
How about this from the NOLA St.Bernhard board!!
just received official word from an ER nurse airlifted from memorial hospital. if anyone can come into contact with any rescuer from st. bernard parish tell them DO NOT let anyone go into the city. she said let everyone know it is chaos people are killing rescuers and policemen.
she was histerical. people broke into the hospital and are sedating themselves stealing drugs and medical equipment and hurting or killing everyone in their way. employees are locked on the top floor of hospital or hiding in cars fending for their lives.
Thanks
The Buses were driving through deep water. tell me the old lady that couldn't walk, was she supposed to crawl there? How long do you think it would take an elderly woman to crawl half a mile? Come on now flail around a little more I am sure you got more B.S. to spew!
And again if that is ALL they had to do why did not that cop or any other authorities point it out to them? Also several had told of being sent one place and then when they got there being told to go someplace else.
Also now hearing that they stopped folks from coming to the Super Dome area because they didn't have the resources to take them all to the Astro Dome.
I prayed really hard Sunday night for a miracle for NO, and Monday morning I thought it had happened. No such luck. And none for the Miss and Ala coastlines either.
Thanks for posting that.
I'd say they were taking the initiative that their "leaders" didn't have...check them out, record who they were and if there was no violence in taking the bus they should be commended not condemned. Authorities should Lead, follow or get the heck out of the way for those that can....
I am not sure we should consider those brutes "people." Ghastly. Ghastly. The worst of humanity.
If that is true, we'll never read that in the news.
Guess we all should be careful for what we pray for.....Good night
Oh, my God! Why isn't CNN and Fox reporting THIS! I was just watching video of the looters using rams and tractors to break down buildings and doors to get in.
Not to minimize 9/11 but the worst part was over for most persons in hours, and they then knew that they were going to survive. In contrast this has been ongoing for 3 days now, with no end in sight for those in NOLA. This is so much worse in that regard. What if one of the WTC towers hadn't collapsed, and 3 days later most were still stuck in the tower, after having witnessed the other collapse, with no info, little food and water, fires still burning below, no idea when the rescuers would get to them?
what utter chaos
Agreed. Being resourceful in a disaster is not criminality. In fact it should be rewarded and commended.
How long have we been hearing about this on the news and everyone ignored it... as long as tourists could go to NO that is all anyone cared about.
I'm thinking it's time to deploy a Brigade that just rotated
back from the Irag theater with a little combat time in Fallujah.
GRAND ISLE, La. -- Survivors took shelter in trees, coffins rose out of the ground and most of the homes on this spit of sand bordering the Gulf of Mexico were torn apart by winds and waves. But nobody died.
"One good day. No fatalities," said Police Chief Euris Du Bois.
Good news on Grand Isle. : )
