President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Tropical Storm 12
Damn straight.
And not a one of them say "I didn't know the storm was coming."
Yes, but it's madness to even consider rebuilding on that spot. Like I said, this has been expected for years... just ignored... like San Francisco ignores they could fall into the ocean any day now... of course that, too, will be Bush's fault!
> It's very obvious they had NO (zero, nada, zilch) real plan or planning capability.
Anyone who choses to even live in a below-sea-level city surrounded by water already brings to the table an amazing capacity for self-deception. And not only at the political level, but I just heard a guy on Scarborough Country (MSNBC) talking about his wife stranded at one of the hospitals. He said they had the generator IN THE BASEMENT. I can think of few strategic plans more foolish than this.
Naturally, it failed at the first hint of flooding.
The western side of the eyewall was directly over New Orleans.
In terms of a 60 hour forecast, you'll never see a more accurate NHC forecast.
I'm just getting irritated with the constant sort of feeling around to try to blame any of this on the forecast.
Did it ever occur to you they dont know?
The biggest problem is that there was no plan in place to move cooperate residents, and imo the warning wasn't given the mandatory evacuation notice soon enough. They knew this would happen eventually, so why didn't these idiots at least make the levee repairs top priority?
I know the "big one" is coming in CA. At least with hurricanes, you can track them on radar. You can't do that with earthquakes.
I like the way you think!
There were no NHC forecast tracks after 11PM Friday night that would not have had the right front quadrant of the storm over Mississippi. None of those 11 forecast tracks had the center of the storm passing West of New Orleans.
What I saw on TV looked like a legion of busses.
Mostly yella painted school type busses being orderly loaded by young guys in military uniforms.
God forbid those two show up!
I am off the wagon over this mess in LA/MS/AL. All I need to send me to AA is JJ and AS.
Please, no. Rise up, Freepers. Save me from the need to head back to those endless meetings.
That is why they are so depressed....no high life for the rest of their terms.
FEDERAL GOV'T?
President Bush did something quite unprecendent qualifying Lousiana as State of Emergecny allowing FEMA to start moving before the Hurricane hit. If anything the Federal Gov't was more prepared than the Local/State which is responsible for evac the people and preparing the people.
I think after this disaster we need to find out where the Homeland Security funds went that were appropriated to Louisiana and New Orleans.
Scarborough must have repeated that at least 4 times during his program.
A lady on WLL...Her husband is an official in St. Bernard's Parish. She evacuated, he stayed. She is pleading on the local officials' behalf for any kind of help for St. Bernard's Parish. There is no place that's dry there. The rescuers have no food or water for themselves, let alone for all the people who need rescuing. They need food, water, boats, help getting people out and a place to bring them to.
" It sounds to me that they were just praying it would never happen."
That, to me, seems to have been their vaunted plan or something very close to it.
I think we can all agree that whatever plan they may have had for an approaching Category V hurricane, it was just plain piss-poor.
Are you stating categorically that if those people had heard the annoucement they would have jumped on thoss buses and left?
