I just paid $4.09 per gallon to fill up with regular. An hour ago the same station was at $3.09. I have verification from WSB Radio 750 Atlanta that local stations are charging from $4 to $6 per gallon, while Atlanta motorists are queued up for blocks to get some. Rumors are that the gas supply in Atlanta will run out before the weekend.
"Sure be a shame to see someone run a junk car over the thieves' pumps"
"IronJack" has turned into "RubberJohnny"
If you don't like the price don't buy it, or go ahead and try and take it and see what happens.
What you perceive as "gouging" and the like is part of the capitalist system. I have a feeling there is no use explaining it to you.......
I passed half a dozen stations on the way home (this was at 7:00 PM) and all of them either 1) had pumps that were empty, 2) had all stations filled with vehicles, or 3) had several vehicles waiting in lines. It was as bad as when we had the hurricanes last year. The situation got progressively worse as I made my way home. I saw prices from $2.51 to $2.79.
ATMs still have cash, and there was no apparent rush on the ATM machines.
The grocery stores had a normal or fewer-than-normal number of shoppers and the shelves looked fairly well stocked.
I fully expect that at this time tommorrow, we'll be talking about shortages at grocery stores in addition to the gas pump.
Stay safe.
WSB won the battle. WGST is nothing now.
WSB has Scott Slade and Cap'n Herb in the early morning.
Then Neal Boortz with Belinda Skelton and Royal T. Marshall.
Clark Howard in the afternoon.
Then Sean Hannity in the evening.
They win all of the ratings all of the time. The only thing
wrong with WSB is that they lost the Braves games this year.
In New Orleans, they call this looting...
Ah, but the new station (820?) has Laura Ingraham in the morning. I think they are making inroads ratings-wise. I wouldn't listen to Boortz for anything. I used to listen to WGST all day until they changed the morning format and got rid of Glenn Beck.
The way I see it, you have two choices during a run. Keeping the price lower than the market will bear and running out of gas, or keeping the price at market rates (which some here are calling "gouging") so that there's always some left in reserve. Now if you have an emergency and need to fill up for whatever reason, which situation would you rather face -- a filling station that is out of gas altogether, or one where there's gas available although at a higher price than you are used to paying?
Exactly. When you hear price gouging, the translation is:
I want to hoard, but it costs too much.
My tank was only half empty, but if we do indeed run out of gas for a week or so, then I will be part of the survivors. Or at least my employment will survive.
You may have the luxury of being able to stay home when gas is unavailable. I do not.
You better stay up all night guarding it...That's stuff like gold now...
Oh, just lovely. Now instead of being able to tank up at $5 a gallon, now I don't get ANY at $3.00 a gallon. Brilliant.
The lead dog of the EPA suspended the requirement for mixing exotic chemicals into some of the gasoline for the several states to decrease the overall costs...
I'd say if the gov't wanted more refineries, there's a way to get them...I believe we're being scammed...
I believe this is more serious than people think. Some of the stations where I live are out of gas with none on the way. Prices are over $3 - up .50 in two days and I expect they will be higher tomorrow. I heard 20 out of 90 stations where I live are out and have closed. This will be a very serious blow to the economy.
My dad had a 74 F150. One of the first things he did was install a 100 gallon tank in the bed of the truck and built a ¾ plywood bench over it, right behind the cab. Probably not the safest set-up, depending, but you could cruise from Houston to Jacksonville without filling up. Thats handy, but nowadays itd be expensive filling up at the destination.
The energy markets at all levels seemed to have gotten it consistently wrong this week. Yesterday was probably the day for a retail panic.
If LOOP gets power, how hard do you think it will be to get it operating given that Port Fourchan's land access has been severed and its other infrastructure hit in a major way?
Do you get your fuel from the same place as Atlanta and the southeast? We are having major problems here in Asheville, NC.
Stores all fully stocked...as is our storage.
They lost them to WGST who now occasionaly play them instead of Rush. Ggrrrrr!! Wish WSB would take them back!
My husband and I are split btwn two homes right now. I'm in Atlanta and he's in Toccoa, GA. He is without TV, so I had to fill him in on the phone today about the devastation in NO. I told him to make sure he got a full tank of gas today. He went by at lunch and there were already lines at the gas stations there. People were filling up milk jugs, toolboxes, anything they could get their hands on. It took him 40 min to get through the line and he was 5th in line.
Looks like the panic is spreading well beyond Atlanta now, and the hoarding has already begun.
There appears to be a dividing line around the Rockies. Those west of Rockies appear to not be having any shortages, while those of east of the Rockies are. With the problems accelerating as you move east of the Mississippi.
I live in Atlanta, but am currently in Virginia..my girlfriend called and told me she had to wait in line for 45 minutes and got a steal on gas at $3.29 a gallon, but there are stations that are charging $6 per gallon..from what I've heard (this is the internet I know), the pipeline should be back to 60% by this weekend..
