CA: Schwarzenegger hints he eyes re-election

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is beginning to sound like Candidate Schwarzenegger, hinting in interviews that he plans to run for re-election in 2006.

The Republican governor could announce his plans as soon as mid-September, around the state GOP convention and after the Legislature adjourns for the year. At the same time, he will be ramping up a campaign for three ballot initiatives set to go before voters in a Nov. 8 special election.

"I think he needs to do it for two good reasons," said Bill Whalen, a fellow at the Hoover Institution who worked for former Republican Gov. Pete Wilson. "It will invigorate the Republican base, which he sorely needs to do if he has any chance to win the special election. And it sends a positive message to the donor community that he's not going to cut and run."

Schwarzenegger has fooled political prognosticators before, and few can say for certain what his announcement will be.

Two years ago he surprised nearly everyone, including many of his own advisers, when he announced on the "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" that he would run to replace Gov. Gray Davis in the state's historic recall election.

Since taking office in late 2003, Schwarzenegger has been vague about whether he would seek a second term. But recently, amid sagging poll numbers and little public support for his reform initiatives, the governor has begun signaling he won't give up on the job anytime soon.

"I am not here for the short run. I am a follow-through guy," he told Sacramento radio host Tom Sullivan in a call-in program last week.

Later, he told a television reporter he might agree soon to an interview about his re-election plans.

"I don't walk away from things that I think are unfinished," Schwarzenegger told KCRA-TV in Sacramento.

The hints of an impending announcement come as the Hollywood star and former body building champion struggles to burnish his image after months of criticism from labor unions and Democratic activists. Since launching his "year of reform" in January, he has been dogged by protesters, denounced in television spots and criticized for his fundraising practices.

His decision to skip next week's opening of the University of California, Merced, the first new UC campus in 40 years, has only added to the perception that the governor is under siege.

Still, GOP strategists said they have been urging Schwarzenegger for months to announce his re-election plans — in part for the sake of the ballot initiatives.

Without an assurance that the governor wants to remain in office, state Republican officials said they fear he will have a hard time generating support for implementing a state spending cap, changing the way legislative districts are drawn and making teachers work longer to get off probation.

Democrats contended the initiatives are little more than a Republican power grab.

"This special election is about Arnold Schwarzenegger's agenda, and it's the platform for his re-election," said state Treasurer Phil Angelides, a Democrat planning to run for governor next year.

"The reforms don't mean a damn thing if we have nothing but a GReenocracy in its place... or do you deny that any such thing is occurring."

Not wanting to comment on something I have never heard of, perhaps you could give us YOUR precise definition of a GReenocracy -

LOL.. Is that the best you can do.

You take some words and twist them to your flavor, how convenient.

You aren't attacking Tom and the Bots when you claim aRnie is better equipped to get the job done. Is that all politics is about these days,
All Q factors and no experience not required?

You fault Tom for never getting anything done, but you would vote for him as Gub. LOL

---

"Now you try and backpeddle and praise Tom, what a loser."

Not fair to attack Tom as a loser ( he did win a few elections )

---

Now if that isnt a stretch and a half, I don't know what one is.. LOL. I was calling you a loser, not Tom. and that isn;t an attack. just calling it the way I see it after this little exchange today.

You can not play both sides of the aisle and claim to be a conservative when you don't vote for and support conservatism.

--

Insults.. lol

Tomacazies.. ;-)

Your profile page needs a Barf
Alert when I read this..

--
Why are you here ? - Hope to find something you can use against my logic ?

Fool- deal with the subject and rethink your arguments instead of attempting a personal attack

Impressed ?

ROTF,, splitting my sides in laughter..

Thanks for the
Bumps

"All Q factors and no experience not required? "

All the Q factors and experience are worth zero if you don't get elected...

"You fault Tom for never getting anything done, but you would vote for him as Gub. LOL"

Put up a Republican that could get elected and I'll vote for him. Much better a Republican that can't do anything then a Democrat who can.

"Insults.. lol

Tomacazies.. ;-) "

Oh, do you consider yourself one ?
Are you irked that Tom advertises the fact that he is the SECOND strongest Republican prospect ?

"You can not play both sides of the aisle and claim to be a conservative when you don't vote for and support conservatism. "

Correct - when you don't vote for the most conservative ELECTABLE politician, you're not.

"ROTF,, splitting my sides in laughter.. "

Thanks ... and we always have fun doing it ... ye haw !

"Thanks for the Bumps"

De Nada my friend - seemed like you needed some help ...

No , my FRiend, it is you who needs the help.

--Put up a Republican that could get elected and I'll vote for him. Much better a Republican that can't do anything then a Democrat who can.

This remark troubles me more than anything. He has done a lot, and not all good by any means which you seem more than willing to ignore. tsk tsk..

------

Just keep that defeatist attitude and the CA GOP will be dead in no time, the heartbeat is faint as is.

And with fair weather "conservative" folks like you , I can't say as it will be missed much either.

See...there's two things (at least) that every politco needs in order to be succesful.

The gotta have policy knowledge and they gotta be a good candidate.

McClintock may very well be the smartest man in California...but he's an uninteresting candidate. He's a boring speaker, he exudes very little charisma, and there's nothing in his back ground that makes him exciting.

In other words, he's not california enough... maybe he could win a Governorship or even a Senate campaign in any other state in America, but in California, where people want slicky shiny objects, he's a snore fest.

Maybe before, but not now.
Arnie's appeal is tarnished.
Tom's the real deal.

It's brass versus gold.

The electorate has evolved. At least this voter has.
I crave intelligent sincerity, not shiny promises.

"He has done a lot, and not all good by any means which you seem more than willing to ignore. tsk tsk.."

Ignore ? I don't see where you commented on anything he's done ...

In truth, the only notice I've seen of State politics lately is the teachers unions whining about what Arnold has/is going to do - if they are crying that hard, I know he's doing a good job !

"Just keep that defeatist attitude and the CA GOP will be dead in no time..."

defeatist attitude LOL I'm dealing with reality - if you think that lighting will strike and you will get a conservative government in CA overnight you are living in a fantasy world.

If you think that Tom has a shot at Lt. Gov. why not find a way to work with Arnold ?

Unless of course you don't WANT Tom to get elected...

Geez Louise,, I get NO comment earlier when I ask you about little issues like the Sierra Nevada Conservancy, so what's the diff. aRnoids never seem to want to answer questions like that for some reason..lol

so I guess mentioning the supposed major drops in workers comp rates, etc, would go unanswered much less unmentioned by aRnoids like yourself too,, I wonder why? that seems like a plus if true..

--

why not try and make your own reality instead of buying into hype hype hype,, all that has gotten is a lot of lip service to reform reform reform and ended up with
ALL of us in deeper debt debt debt.

for some reason, we hear little about the debt, and even with somewhat significant reforms, there is no guarantee we will be any better off as the gub is a spending kind of guy anway, the last 2 budgets speak to that fact.

when you try and please everybody, you end up pleasing nobody.

Tom does not need aRnie to win as LT Gub unless he tries to undercut him, aRnie needs him and conservatives to show up the next 2 election cycles and more being as the Indies and dems that voted for aRnie are no lock anymore, in fact, many of them probably regret their votes that fateful day in 2003. which is really odd, they got almost everything they could have asked for anyway, if not from him, from the legislature.

btw,, will the gUb veto the Gay marriage bill when it hits his desk?

I won't argue that Arnie's appeal is tarnished... I was sure expecting a lot more from him than what I got.

And I hope you're right about Tom... I personally don't see it, but I hope somebody like him can do more than what we've gotten with Ahnold.

So, what changed your mind? (or is it changed, at all?)

4 days ago you referred to those pointing out some of that "tarnish" as the "Teflon Twaddle Brigade."

For 2 years, it seems to have been more of the same.

Is this a total transformation before our very eyes?

"Geez Louise,, I get NO comment earlier when I ask you about little issues like the Sierra Nevada Conservancy, so what's the diff."

Your "asking me" was in the form of a "still beat your wife" so it was obviously not worth replying to -

"Did you know aRnie was gonna stick it to the Sierra
Nevada property and busniess owners by signing the monstrosity called the Sierra Nevada Conservancy. Gray wasn't and I don't think Tom would."

Perhaps you would care to point out exactly what is in the bill you dont like, so I don't have to read your mind regarding what you are upset about ?

"...there is no guarantee we will be any better off as the gub is a spending kind of guy anway, the last 2 budgets speak to that fact."

As you may recall, during the election Arnold said if he could not get results throught the legislature, he would take it directly to the people - Tom is supporting ALL of Arnolds propositions.

"...aRnie needs him and conservatives to show up the next 2 election cycles and more being as the Indies and dems that voted for aRnie are no lock anymore, in fact, many of them probably regret their votes that fateful day in 2003.which is really odd..."

That's what it all boils down to, dosen't it ?

Is your dream world a Dem back in the big chair, and Tom having LESS influence again ?

Or perhaps you think Tom and his supporters should support Arnold and keep him there, so they might actually be listened to and work their way back into the process ?

"btw,, will the gUb veto the Gay marriage bill when it hits his desk?"

Are you taking bets ?

I've noticed you seem to put a lot of importance on what people say they will do, or what people think they will do, rather then what they do - does this go back to Toms ineffectiveness over many years in gUbment ?

Hey , You're back! The CAGOP go along guy.
Never anser a question directly, or just out right dodge it... or better yet twist a reply to suit your own hollow logic. Typical moderate response. .

Now because Im gonna tell ya to pack sand , you'll ckaim victory while smearing someone with vapid remarks yourself.

Like always,, you seem too lazy or ignorant to do much of any research on your own or acknowledge what has posted many times on many threads here for the last 2 years or what is happening or not happening right before your very eyes..

I have more important things to attend to then satisfy your obvious need for help in having someone do for you that you will not do on your own.

Well, the same boiling water which hardens the egg, softens the potato.

Hopefully we can agree on substance, if not methods.

I agree, namecalling is not constructive.

"Never anser a question directly, or just out right dodge it..."

So far you have not asked direct questions, other then those that require speculation on my part.

i.e. Do I think someone will...?

"I have more important things to attend to then satisfy your obvious need for help in having someone do for you that you will not do on your own."

It appears that you wish me to research an item, speculate what it might be about it that you have concerns about, and them comment on my guess as to what upsets you.

Now I think it would be pretty foolish of anyone to go through that, if you have not done the research to formulate an intelligent question/comment, why should I do it for you ?

It DOES trouble me though that all through our conversation it appears that you think that we would be better off had Davis never been recalled - Were you against the recall ?

What an insufferable type of person to try and deal with. You're smarter than this.

Who's upset? lol

You're the one who keeps trying to say I'm being evasive or not descriptive enough of what my concerns are, they are not unlike many others who you also impugn and use the same tactics with.

This is a forum, Folks discuss and , Yes, even SPECULATE.

I have asked a number of questions, direct questions, and all you do is offer this back.. LOL

PS I voted for the Recall and trusted that folks would not jump on a Trojan Horse's back and sadly was disappointed as a result, upwards of 20 plus billion dollars of new debt worth.
