San Ramon oil giant Chevron Corp. said it will give $5 million to disaster-relief charities in states hit by Hurricane Katrina.
Chevron (NYSE:CVX) will give $3 million to the American Red Cross for aid in Mississippi and Louisiana. It will also give $2 million to different charities in the affected area, particularly those close to Chevron businesses.
Chevron has many operations in the Gulf of Mexico area affected by the storm. The company has asked affected employees in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida to call an 800 number to let the company know their current situations.
It has about 3,000 employees in those areas hardest hit by the hurricane.
The American people are doing their part.
Letters from a FReeper - Americans head out to help family, friends and strangers hurt by Katrina***6:20:54 AM EDT My good neighbor just let me know her mom and dad are alive in rural Mississippi. She and here husband said it took days before they could reach her mom by cell and that was a miracle. They are heading up there with a camper, generator and much needed suppplies. They are unsure how they will reach them because of the unknown rural road situation. I am sending boxes of dry goods, can goods, sheets and towels, soap ect... and much needed water and gatorade. I am asking them to somehow find their parish or local church this weekend so that I might have a good address to send more help and supplies. God knows, we went through three hurricanes last year, but all category 2 or less. ...............8:11:32 AM EDT ...***
They can afford it.
"What other companies are going to step up?"
Probably lot's of them. Not all will issue press releases and untold numbers of small companies will donate by way of red cross.
They should give more the gouging jackasses.
I know that some drug companies (yes, those mean, evil R&D pharmaceutical ones) have pledged or donated critical medical supplies, such as insulin, to the victims.
Its good business for the oil companies doing biz in the area to see to it that things get back to normal asap...
I was hoping they would.
Great!
WAlMart offered up more than mil early this morning or yesterday?
There's nothing wrong with letting America know you're helping out.
It encourages others to do the right thing.

To the EDS Worldwide Team:
As you know by now, Hurricane Katrina has devastated much of the U.S. Gulf Coast, leaving more than 1 million people temporarily homeless. On the other side of the world, the worst monsoon rains in more than 100 years claimed more than 1,000 lives last month in western India. All of us at EDS are deeply moved by these tragedies and send our condolences to all of those affected.
In both regions, the relief efforts will require tremendous resources, both human and monetary. EDS has established a program to provide financial assistance. Employees wishing to donate to the relief efforts can make credit card contributions to the American Red Cross or America's Second Harvest at the following link http://eds.kintera.org/hurricane. Those contributions designated for India will be channeled through the Red Cross India Flood Relief Fund. EDS will match all employee donations made through the Web site up to a total of $1 million. To begin the program, EDS will make a $100,000 contribution.
More information on the program will be posted on infoCentre.
We encourage you to join us in helping people and communities recover from these terrible storms. We also encourage you to support our annual United Way campaign, which begins tomorrow, September 1. Your participation in either one of these programs is much appreciated.
With best regards,
Yes it is.
I hope they'll give more.
I heard that Home Depot will continue to pay its employees in the region for 90 days, regardless if they are working or not.
Not to mention there free supplys and other stuff they are/will be doing.
People seem to think of large public-owned companies like the government -- that they have vast unlimited resources that they could/should turn over to people in need. For both corporations and government, they are not entities in themselves, but they are made up of individuals. Government assistance comes out of the pocket of individuals in the form of taxes. Corporate assistance comes out of the pocket of individuals in the form of decreased profit distribution and/or depressed share price for the owners (i.e. shareholders... i.e. individuals).
I just tried to fill up here in Atlanta at a chevron and could not for the long lines. 3.09 per gallon and the clerk was outside raising those numbers on the board. People are panicking and filling up here and its not even rush hour!
Chevron has it rolling for sure here in the ATL.
Thank you for the information.
Bump!
I don't have a problem with a press release, I would expect it out of any large corporation. It's good PR for an industry with a bad image.
Chevron needs to help us at the pump! I just paid $3.11 for gas! ACK!
But seriously that is great that they are trying to help. Is anyone keeping a list of who WILL and who WILL NOT help?
