Man, if they could manage disaster relief like they can manage the news, things would be wonderful now. As for spoon-feeding, try some math on St. Bernard Parish, which was reported today as completely under water, many feet above the roof level:

A x B x 66,631 = Casualties in the Parish, where

A = per cent not evacuating

B = per cent that can't swim very well after 24 hours

66,631 = Population of Parish in 1990 Census

Ping to something you have no doubt seen. In my heart, I know your friend has assessed the situation perfectly. Good Lord!

This is another report consistent with my Sunday afternoon predictions:

Predictions:
Fatalities in the 1000 range. [this report, let's hope it doesn't go much higher to prove me wrong]
Superdome structure intact, few if any fatalities inside from unrest/panic/stress. [single suicide only fatality reported] Stories from dome are mostly uplifting tales of survival, faith, prayer, and song. [Unknown]
Some areas of NO never rebuilt. (But the tourist areas will live again). [Loooking plausible]
Oil released from strategic reserves to reduce price spikes. [Yes]
The cost dwarfs that of Andrew. [Apparently]

Is there an actual official estimated death toll yet?

Worst disaster is US history prehaps.

One storm in the 1910s killed 8,000 I think.

My take on this mayor, with his hysterical claims of mega deaths and the need to "abandon" New Orleans, is that he is a metro sexual ninny with his dress up over his head. Doesn't he realize that it's his job to calm the natives, provide reason for hope and offer leadership?
If Rudy behaved in this manner after 9/11, God knows what the social/economic/political fallout could have been.

This is a tragedy of nearly incomprehensible proportions.
The Gulf coast is in great need of prayers and cash.
