Gas stations generally have to charge based on the price of the incoming shipment; they don't have that much of a profit margin (except maybe in Wisconsin, where the gubmint actually mandates that they make a healthy profit on gasoline).

If we had gotten ANWR drilling started back in 2001, this particular impact would be a lot less.

I really don't give a damn what Ronald Reagan would or would not have done, and no one knows what he would have said or done since he never faced anything like this.

Agreed, but with one addendum: though it wasn't to this scale, he did have something very tragic happen on his watch, the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986. When that happened, he put off the SOU speech (scheduled that night), and became the Consoler-in-Chief. Reagan provided what was needed then. W provided what was needed now. I see your point.

Nor did I want a SOU Address. All I wanted from the President is what I got. Action. Bluntless. Detail and Leadership. This is what the American people wanted in majority, not rhetorical florishes that do nothing to ease suffering or anxiety.

We already had eight years of that. Thank God that it wasn't twelve (with Gore).

If people thought that the most important aspect of being President of this country was to sound like an erudite snob, either Gore or Kerry would be in the WH. If the war and the economy were as bad as Flipper and the Dem media made it out to be, Kerry would be CIC. The American people had a clear choice, and IMO, they made the right one. /rant

I agree. They are advertising on the Seattle news channels a local place to donate to pay for NW Medical help going down there. I wouldn't be surprised what they do with the money when it comes to Seattle, probably use it for "choice".

Agreed.

Some priorities are REALLY out of whack when instead of discussing the efforts under way the President laid out and what we can do to fuether aid, we're supposed to discuss rhetoric and image control. God Help us.

Same here Nic. We've sent money and I'll give blood every couple of months like usual, they like me I'm O+ :-}, but I do hope they think long and hard before rebuilding in the bowl.

they like my blood, too, AB+

They'll rebuild there....but what a huge project it will be. Unfathomable, actually, for me.

(PAULAT)Let's be adults. W understands powerful plain-speaking. His bull-horn speech at Ground Zero inspired everyone. This didn't do the job.

Well look who just got up: the head Doom and Gloomer.

Howlin, she's (or it's) been pi**ing all over this thread. Makes me not even want to mention her, lest she get bumped to the top of everyone's ping list. We know what we have with W. Plain, direct, hat AND cattle. If we want some faux tears emotionalist in the WH, get Bubba...or Jimmy Swaggart. For my vote, W is the guy we elected. Daily I'm reminded how blessed we are to have him at this time.

Thank you for your prayers. We are hoping/praying they decided to leave at the last moment and just didn't call anyone thinking they could make it to Baton Rouge - but got hung up somewhere. Any kind of phone service in that area is dead.

This was my criticism, listed in #622:

I would have had him condemn the looting. I would have had him make some kind of statement that Americans are better than some of the pictures have shown. I would have had him say that the rescue workers are heroes...and I would have had him (without fully mentioning it) say that these rescue workers are the equal of any in our history. I thought he sounded kind of silly talking about "144 generators." We're sending generators. Period. The laundry-list-by-the-numbers was not Presidential. Again, just my opinion.

I offered this opinion very respectfully.

It was a poor speech. Let's call a spade a spade. He can do better. He looked and sounded exhausted.

What do YOU do for work? Maybe you and he can trade jobs for a while. After a few days of having people hate you for the simple fact that you have a pulse, and being the leader of the free world (and thus a constant target)...

too tired? too exhausted? He works all the time! EVEN ON "VACATION"! Jeezo! Did I accidently leave Free Republic and tune in to the "Dr. Phil Winfrey Show"?

In my view Bush and Chertoff were excellent today, He asuaged a lot of my fears that they didn't know what the hell they were doing. When he said it would take years to rebuild, I knew he knew exactly what he was doing. For once, I both support and am greatly relieved that the feds have taken the bit from the states.

I thought he sounded kind of silly talking about "144 generators." These 144 generators are not the type you see running some sound system for a protest rally. These are big boys with enough kilowatts to run large areas--and pumps to pump the flooded area out.

This was not a speech, it was here are the facts, here is what we are doing and it is only the beginning. Now lets get to work. He expressed confidence that we would be successful in rebuilding, and he asked for Donations. He does not have to kiss your butt and look emotionally into your eyes to do the freaking job he has to do. He is not slick willie and he is not the Zombie Mayor of NO, or the Crybaby Governor Blanco, or the pathetic over emotional Sen Landrieu he is a leader and he shows it. That is why we REhired him.

BUMP, with amendment in last sentence.

The ones that worry me are the NOLA Mayor and LA Governor. Earlier today the Guv made a statement indicating she didn't even know she had authority to call out the LA National Guard.

Probably because you don't know much about generators and are ignoring the fact that without electric current, it is very tough to get anything done these days. Hand pumps, axes and two man saws are not how this situation is gonna get fixed.
