The Decline of Fox News
Media Monitor ^ | 8/31/2005 | Cliff Kincaid

Posted on 08/31/2005 8:40:33 AM PDT by Mike Bates

In response to my column on the decline of cable news because of their obsession with missing-person cases, one person wrote in, "Come-On. Get a Grip... What's wrong with a couple of hours 'break' from Real News.."

A couple hours break?

On the other hand, one said, "I am so sick of hearing all of the details of the Aruba fiasco that I just can't tolerate it any more. This Aruba show is sinking Fox News, and I am watching it less and less."

Here's what someone else wrote:

"I just read your article and have to agree completely that the Holloway reporting has gone completely off the deep end. I used to be a junky watching Hard Ball, O'Reilly, Hannity/Colmes and then Scarborough Country until about a month or two ago.

It was getting too much for me to waste that much time but these shows used to be compelling. Especially the first year or so of Scarborough Country. Joe used to be hard-hitting, very conservative and used to expose media bias and liberal hypocrisy. Not any more. Lately he has tried to go head to head and compete with Greta just because they are on at the same time.

I don't watch any of them. Everything I need to know I can find right here on FreeRepublic.

I've often said that the dumbest Freeper is far more intelligent than the brightest news anchor from any network.

For the record, I stick to local TV news only. More news, less entertainment.

Around here (metropolitan Chicago) the local news is basically a televised version of the police blotter.

Gee, this op-ed seems to conflict with this report.

Conservative Fox News Channel Up 32% (WOW) In August Ratings As Other Cable News Operations Crash

This was an idea several years ago. However, most of the "hosts" have been banned or gone on to other forum adventures.

Yep. It is gone as a reliable source. I can barely tolerate more than a couple of minutes at a time.

Huddy neads a decent meal.

She looks too much like a little girl than a full grown woman. But that's just my opinion.

Gee, this op-ed seems to conflict with this report.

As noted by others on this thread, not really. The piece focuses on the quality of FoxNews rather than its popularity.

Actually, I'm looking for some guidance here.

I thought Krauthammer was conservative as he supports the war against Terrorism in Iraq, which I thought was a conservative position. Hannity also, I thought was conservative, although he becomes overly maudlin at times about illegal invaders.

Although I have many problems with the Bush Administration, most particularly and recently its total ineptitude at protecting our southern border from invaders, on the whole I support the efforts in Iraq.
What disturbs me in that area is it appears we have been bogged down there too long, while other equally dangerous targets like Iran, Syria and North Korea are permitted to fester unattended to.

I alos am concerned about splinter elements in the Republican Party like John McCain et al, and the problems in facing down the Democrat minority in the Senate over Judicial appointments.

The apparent dearth of real conservative figures on the national level in the Republican Party is also an issue of concern.

Romney, Giuliani, Frist, McCain, etc. are really not representative of the majoirty of Republicans, I feel, on most issues.

Rice is still pretty much an unknown qunaitity, and so are Allen and Pence. Tancredo is good on the illegal invader issue, but where does he stand on other subjects?

Brit Hume's program is now the only one I regularly try to catch.

Hume's Special Report is by far the best show on FNC, to be sure. Cavuto's show is pretty good too. The rest range from inconsistent (The O'Reilly Factor) to pure garbage (Hannity & Colmes).

I hate to break this to you, but Fox News ain't really "conservative" at all. Do a little research on Mr. Rupert Murdoch and his media empire and then ask yourself what would make anyone think he's a conservative (in the American sense of the word).

You are using the same illogical argument the left uses. They say the Washington Times has no credibility because they are owned by the Rev. Moon. Then they say that ABC, CBS and NBC cannot be biased to the left because of their corporate owners. Those arguments are just so much B.S. What Fox news has done is not lean to the right, but to present both sides, which no one else does. I don't watch Fox when Whorealdo is on. I rarely watch BOR and Greta. I can't watch much of H & C because of C. However, I do watch their news segments because I believe they are not biased to the left. So what if Greta talks about Natalie Holloway. Does CBS, ABC and NBC present news all the time? I think the only channel that does that is the CNN headline news and I will not watch a minute of anything CNN.

You must have missed the thread the other day when a few Freepers were referring to Ann Coulter as a "lightweight." Of course none of these pseudo-intellects were doing any syndicated writing to show Ann how to do it.

There are Freepers who apparently live to bash Rush on any thread he is mentioned.

And anyone who claims that Fox is for a certain IQ level is nothing but a pompous ass whose own IQ I would question.

You're right about Cavuto, IMHO. He's worth watching much of the time.

Everything I need to know I can find right here on FreeRepublic.
Then how can you make the observation, "Fox News is nothing more than the same tabloid sh!t that pervades all of Rupert Murdoch's media outlets." ?????

I find myself spending less time watching FoxNews. Brit Hume's program is now the only one I regularly try to catch.

My thoughts, exactly. I would not be upset if the FoxNews Programming Director or Peter Chernin showed up on the side of a milk carton, as some other erstwhile notables have:

AMEN to every word. I have been saying this for along time. Except for the top of the hour news, a find myself avoiding FOX because of their obsession crime cases. And I use to be a FOX News junkie. Are you listening Hannity?

What FOX is doing is appealing to a broad spectrum of people. For Instance, I don't watch Greta but apparently huge numbers of people do. There is a show for everyone so to speak. And if it gets apolitical people who watch the news/entertainment show to consume les liberal bias at other stateions and gets them to watch more of Hannity or Brit, then FOX is doing a masterful long term marketing job AND it will help get people to have access to non-liberal biased news....which is a good thing.

Mine is this:

(1) Fox is a good source of news, alot better than blathernews and the other msm's.
(2) The only other source of good news is Rush.

MY OPINION!

Krauthammer also came out strong against coddling of illegal immigrants, while Barnes tried to wave it off.
