If anyone has read anything about the effect of this upon the European economy, I would be interested in receiving the reference. When we were in UK in August, the cost of gas was approximately $9/gallon. With unemployment in France and Germany at 10-13%, how will increased fuel costs effect their situation? They may be facing a serious recession given their unemployment and predilection toward high taxes and costly social programs.

Alas, something else they will blame US for.

My friend is serving in Kuwait with the airforce right now and is supposed to come home in two weeks. We haven't heard from his girlfriend yet. Their apartment was in Biloxi only about half a mile from the beach (we assume it's gone). Last we heard was that she went to work at the hospital. Their dog was in the apartment. This is terrible. I hope only the phones/cellphones are to blame and she will call any of us soon. Please keep them in your prayers. God bless!

"The death toll will rise very dramatically," Major General Harold Cross, commander of the Mississippi National Guard, told CNN television.

I wonder what "very dramatically" means?

The nightmarish scenario in Louisiana is paralled by the dire situation in Mississippi, where reports coming in from rescue workers show a desperate situation.

Residents from the state are being deputized by local sheriffs to go into the rubble and reach the coastline to recover bodies of victims from the storm who were killed by the massive storm surge.

Firefighters from around the country are filling up refrigerated 18-wheeler trucks with bodies. According to one firefighter on Fox News, the bodies are "being treated with dignity and not tossed around", but the official death toll remains at 185 for the time being.

Local county coroners give the low number of fatalities due to a lack of electricity, forcing recovery operations to move all bodies to trucks until a more subtle way can be found for identification.

In some cases, entire families are discovered by rescuers in closets where they were drowned by the surge. Local forecasters had advised residents to go into a closet and put a mattress over themselves to protect from damaging winds in-case their roof blew off during the storm.

Firefighters can be seen spray painting numbers on homes as a way of leaving notice for others that the home has been checked. There are homes with anywhere from three to as high as thirteen bodies contained inside. These codes are then seen and trucks can come by later to pick up bodies and bring them to a central location.

"They are hanging in trees and they are pulling them out 30 at a time. Entire families found drowned in their homes and washing up on shore."

Yes, I heard the same thing a coupld of days ago ... heard the news is not reporting what is really going on both in Mississippi and in Louisiana.... It just seems to get worse.

I believe this report. All through this catastrophe, detailed reports have been suspiciously sparse. The whole thing is much worse than they are allowing us to know. Instead, we are being fed dribs and drops of information at a rate they think we can digest it.

Whats happening to this country? it's like a nightmare scenario. Just like all the survivalist said would happen. Do we even deserve Gods protection anymore?

EYEWITNESS: By Toxy Morris, a surgeon in Hattiesburg, Mississippi

The conditions are extremely bad here. There are murders, looting and vandalism. Every tree in sight is down and there’s no electricity or water. The army is issuing water to us and we have to use lamps. About 80% of the state has no power and it will be a month until we get it back.

There’s four of us in the household. Me, my wife and two sons, one of whom, Ben, is still en route from Edinburgh. He has been studying there and is in Florida right now . My other son, Rob, is a newspaper reporter and is stationed with the police in Mississippi. He’s very busy right now.

We have had three killings in our neighbourhood. One of the people killed was a friend of mine, an Anglican priest. He was shot down for his car and its contents. He leaves behind a wife and six children. It’s a very sad situation. I have also heard that a lady was shot to death for a bag of ice. Can you believe that? Over a bag of ice!

These three murders haven’t been reported in the media here – I think they are trying to avoid ill feeling and panic. But we have a serious crisis on our hands. There are some bad apples, although it’s not as bad as New Orleans. Everyone is very distressed but they are pulling together, trying to be courageous.

We are cooking on charcoal. We have enough food but it is going to become a problem because there are very few stores open and all the perishables have been destroyed. You can’t get any gasoline either. On the upside, people are getting hold of generators so the 500-bed city hospital now has power again.

I don’t blame Bush – this kind of destruction is too big for one politician to fix. The storm itself was as large as the state of Florida. Everything in its path was wiped out.

My wife works part-time for an answering company. One of their clients is a funeral home up here in Upstate New York has a couple of its employees down in Biloxi as volunteers. Anyways, one of the employees called in from Biloxi - via the answering service - to let their employer know of their status. She said that they were "processing 300+ bodies per day" in Biloxi alone...
