It is with heavy heart I write this...
I have finally reconnected with my best friend who is a paramedic who was sent from Georgia 2 days ago to Gulf Port, Mississippi before the hurricane hit.
He just reached me within the last 10 mins via emergency cell phone to tell me he was alive.
Thousands of bodies have been discovered throughout Mississippi in Gulf Port, Waveland,Hancock County,Bay of St.Louis.
They are hanging in trees and they are pulling them out 30 at a time. Entire families found drowned in their homes and washing up on shore.
The stories he could tell me were brief. National Guard is on the scene and arresting anyone seen on the streets.
The numbers are staggering and what I have been told tonight will shake people to their foundation as the numbers will be coming out in the next 24-hours of just how many people have actually perished in these and 3 other beach communities.
More to follow....
As ken5050 said upthread, there is a near-complete communications breakdown in some areas. I think many folks in our media-driven age just can't get their heads around that -- no cell phone, no landline, no TV, no radio, no 'Net. Nothing at all to get the word out, or in. For some in the new century, that is just unimaginable.

You owe some one an apology, georgio...
You would think so, but this is not always the case. A similar thing occurred after the Great Earthquake of 2004 where areas were too devastated to be able to tell anyone how much damage they sustained. Remember how long it took to get accurate information from the Aceh area?
How do you acquire that?
Can't have what both ways?
I believe the jury is still out on much of what has been posted on this thread.
Well in the case of the Atlanta shooter I was listening to the police radios for Gwinett County.
This is absolutely terrible. It's hard to even imagine.
No, just ignoring posters who argue just to argue. Complete waste of time.
I'm just an observer and not making any accusations.
"You owe some one an apology, georgio..."
Jesus my 7 y/o son acts like this with his sisters.
Grow up.
"Complete waste of time"
So is your senseless hand wringing hysteria.
It is like impossible to get into some of these areas. There are NO cell towers working in some of those areas. No landlines, no power and impossible roads, bridges out and the authorities are trying their best to keep people out. And people expect accurate news this early? Even though they want to, it's very, very hard to get there.
Don't expect good news for several more days.
You have a good point, but sadly, there is another possible explanation. Currently, there is no press in these areas. I have yet to see a single first-hand report from coastal Mississippi. I can understand that they would be reluctant to report rumors like this, but without working phones or press access, rumors like this are all you would have if the story was true.
It's quite possible we've had thousands killed; it's also quite possible that people will exaggerate now. We'll start to know the truth soon enough.
You must not have put your glasses on yet this morning. I haven't made any accusation about anything. I ASKED if this is a prank post because so far nothing on the MSM about this. A question and accusation are not quite the same thing, at least the last time I looked the words up in the dictionary.
You know, considering the lack of information, I don't know why you insist on digging the hole deeper.
There's a lot of rubble. It is going to take weeks with cadaver dogs to find all the bodies under it all (that didn't wash out to sea).
All of this is so terribly heartbreaking. My prayers for all involved.
I haven't read much of this thread, but Fox has reporters in Gulfport and Biloxi.
I haven't been hysterical at all (you may review my posts, if you'd like).
You, on the other hand, have basically done nothing but impugn a longtime FReeper's character because what he is reporting isn't being reported in the mainstream media.
And, people have begun mischaracterizing the original post, which said in part: "Thousands of bodies have been discovered throughout Mississippi in Gulf Port, Waveland,Hancock County,Bay of St.Louis.
They are hanging in trees and they are pulling them out 30 at a time. Entire families found drowned in their homes and washing up on shore."
I find none of this unbelievable. It is one report to put amongst all of the others to create the complete picture which should emerge over the next few days.
It's only some 48 hours since the event. How can you be so sure we know everything from every town and backwater?
Because Katie Couric isn't reporting it?
If that's the case, you're on the wrong forum.
