It is with heavy heart I write this...

I have finally reconnected with my best friend who is a paramedic who was sent from Georgia 2 days ago to Gulf Port, Mississippi before the hurricane hit.

He just reached me within the last 10 mins via emergency cell phone to tell me he was alive.

Thousands of bodies have been discovered throughout Mississippi in Gulf Port, Waveland,Hancock County,Bay of St.Louis.

They are hanging in trees and they are pulling them out 30 at a time. Entire families found drowned in their homes and washing up on shore.

The stories he could tell me were brief. National Guard is on the scene and arresting anyone seen on the streets.

The numbers are staggering and what I have been told tonight will shake people to their foundation as the numbers will be coming out in the next 24-hours of just how many people have actually perished in these and 3 other beach communities.

To insinuate the thread is a prank is a pretty serious charge, however.

I was interested in what the guy had to say until he started maintaining that the government hid the deaths of illegal aliens in Andrew because the "people" would go insane. I don't believe a word of the Andrew nonsense (what politician would instigate a conspiracy with such a tiny, unclear and marginal payoff?) Conspiracies are almost always the imaginings of the intellectually lazy. It is just damn hard to cover up the fact of someone's death. Family and friends normally notice and in a hurricane, they were probably near the person when they passed.

If, God forbid, a tsunami were to hit my area-or if the fault line running underneath a certain part of Manhattan ever shifts-there will be a lot of dead New Yorkers.

There are only so many precautionary measures that can be taken when you're dealing with natural disasters.

I can only feel sympathy for the unfortunate people who are living in LA and MS.

MFH has been around FR for years.

Even the mayor of N.O. has for 2 days made mention of bodies floating in the water, but emphasized that they are focusing on rescuing the living. I saw him say this in interviews on local (WDSU & WWL) Gulf media outlets. It is obvious there are many, many more dead than have yet been tallied or "announced".

It is more than rumor. Sadly.

Actually there might be some footage in police car cams. Many police cars and policeman were unfortunately sitting in their parked cars watching logistically important points. Would be interesting to hear replays of the police radio chatter. Might even have a video of a police car in full reverse trying to stay out of the surge wall.

I am skeptical as well but I don't think we can resolve this tonight. I don't see any way that we can prove or disprove the assertions. Mainly because I think your faith in the MSM is unfounded. The MSM failed to report the mass flooding in New Orleans early on saying that New Orleans dodged a bullet. We now know that was outright wrong. The MSM had failed to perform adequate reconnaissance. They pretty much did not leave the French Quarter or the Super Dome.

Additionally, the MSM is not very good at giving rapid causality reports. The best example I can think of is the Great Earthquake and Tsunami of 2004 where the MSM thought that there was less than 10,000 causalities for almost two days. The main reason was because the media couldn't get into the devastated areas. Some areas were so devastated that there were few humans left able to say how many people were killed. I think we can say that this hurricane has left areas completely disconnected for the rest of the nation. It may take days to reconnect.

Finally, it is very difficult to use past hurricane damages to compare to what this monster storm destroyed. I saw a photo today where a block full of houses looked like they were swept by a giant broom. I'm not kidding, the only thing remaining of where the houses used to be was the foundations. Around the foundations it was perfectly clean. No debris at all. A little to the north: sawdust (the remain of the houses). How can we say how deadly this is?

I heard a news report on the local hi-watt AM news station (WSB) this moring that search and rescue crews were not recovering floating bodies, that they were concentrating on rescuing the living.

I just now got up this morning and read this post and thought WOW how sad! I turned the TV on to get the news about this and--nothing at all about the big number of deaths. What gives?? Is this a prank post or what?

I just now heard the anchors on WDSU (Channel 6) state again that "they are pushing bodies out of the way" to get to live people in the rescue efforts. Just now. On a "real" media outlet. Talking about New Orleans.

One of the unique things about FR is that we 'often' get first hand accounts of news in the making.

I remember first hearing about that disasterous nightclub fire a couple of years ago on FR, from a guy posting from up the street!

So far they are saying on Fox over 100 dead in Mississippi. Newsday, over 100 dead. Louisiana they are not giving numbers out yet. They are working on search and rescue at this point, than recovery in Louisiana. So, I'm hoping this poster is wrong about Mississippi. I cannot see them estimate in the 100+ and then it goes to the thousands, 100+ is sad enough. I hope not. Prayers said for all in the path of Katrina.

I am not submissive by any means. If I had the means, I would have a house on the beach, knowing that sooner or later the odds are it would be hit as hard as the Gulf Coast. I love the ocean, the salt air, the ever present sound of waves breaking. It is a risk I would take, I love the ocean air that much.

I am not singling out anyone in the Gulf Coast. God knows I would be hard pressed to leave my home. But for man to think he has control over nature is a bit self-centered. We can predict events with reasonable certainty and do our best to adapt, but most we cannot control.

I have to jump in..There was/is a near total communications breakdown..Those media on the ground, and able to get reports out, were reporting on thier little slice..the area just aroind them...it will sort itself out soon..

I normally applaud the very wealthiest in our country when they contribute millions of dollars abroad to help the poorest of third world nations with health issues and food supplies for the starving.

Bill Gates and Ted Turner come to mind but I'm sure there are a lot more individuals who do the same, even though the young of those countries may well grow up to hate this country and everything we stand for.

In this time of dire need of our own, I would like to see if these same people, who have such compassion for needy abroad, will build their legacy by also stepping up to the plate to help these desperate people in the South devastated by this herrendous disaster.

I would remind all these folks that their fortunes where made not only by their hard work but by the hard working people of our country who bought their products.

What better way to thank the people who helped make them what they are, or to build their legacy if that is what they seek, than to divert their hundreds of millions back home at this time of need.
