Aug. 30, 2005 Inmates at a prison in hurricane-ravaged New Orleans have rioted, attempted to escape and are now holding hostages, a prison commissioner told ABC News affiliate WBRZ in Baton Rouge, La.
Orleans Parish Prison Commissioner Oliver Thomas reported the incident to WBRZ.
A deputy at Orleans Parish Prison, his wife and their four children have been taken hostage by rioting prisoners after riding out Hurricane Katrina inside the jail building, according to WBRZ.
Officials are expected to hold a press conference regarding the riots at 9 p.m. ET.
A woman interviewed by WBRZ said her son, a deputy at the prison whose family is among the hostages, told her that many of the prisoners have fashioned homemade weapons. Her son had brought his family there hoping they would be safe during the storm.
Prayers for them all...
Unfortunatly more stories like this I am afraid will keep popping up.
Arm the National Guard and let them take target practice. There is too little time to deal with this nonsense.
Oh Lord! Like Louisiana needs moew grief
Sorry if this was already posted on the hurricane thread, but I don't have 3 hours to read through a 90-mile thread, and there is no way to search within a thread.
Can't argue with that, but better add night vision and wait 'till after dark so it won't be on teevee.
I knew the jail situation would deteriorate when I saw them all sitting out on the curb after the jail building flooded.
This can't end well.
Time to send down the troops from Ft Polk that has about 11,000 or so available active duty military including a BCT.
They should have some serious assets there.
Oh no. What horrible news. I thank God (seriously) I am nowhere near that part of the country right now.
Evildoers loot and riot and the National Guard and police seem weak and impotent.
That's good. I generally like the hurricane threads but I've just taken to scanning them. By the time I read through them, there's 50 more responses that have been posted.
Hey, I had forgotten all about Ft. Polk, LA. That's the post where a six-point star is the patch, right?
