Law enforcement efforts to contain the emergency left by Katrina slipped into chaos in parts of New Orleans Tuesday with some police officers and firefighters joining looters in picking stores clean.
At the Wal-Mart on Tchoupitoulas Street, an initial effort to hand out provisions to stranded citizens quickly disintegrated into mass looting. Authorities at the scene said bedlam erupted after the giveaway was announced over the radio.

WWL TV in NO just had the story re the police officer shot. He was shot in the head when he surprised looters in a convenience store. Thanks for confirming that, I thought I heard it correctly.
Gretna and Jeff Parish police showed up almost instantly, shot the guy who shot the cop and arrested three other suspects. Unfortunately they only shot the goblin in the leg. The police officer is in serious condition.
Thanks for the update to the story.

It's awfully difficult to draw your gun when your arms are full of the stuff you're stealing yourself.

Did they mention what color the looting cops were? Sorry, just saw some video on MSNBC and it looked pretty monochromatic to me!

It must be almost like those old sci-fi end of the world movies.Earlier when they were showing video of Gulfport I was thinking to myself that they should just keep a street or two like that and use it for scenes in apocalyptic films. It sure looks just like the end of civilization, doesn't it?

I recommend that you somehow punish yourself for knowing the answer.

It sure looks just like the end of civilization, doesn't it? Yes. It does. I'm sure the survivors are feeling a sense of unreality too.

Should we be surprised that a population accustomed throughout life to welfare as a right also regards looting as simply a matter of opportunity?

A series of nuke attacks or other major WMD from islam on us, and I guarantee the cops will be doing this stuff everywhere. I hope everyone takes a look at anarchy, and is prepared for when it hits.
I crinch to think about this, but I have to agree with you. The virtually absolute devestation left by Katrina is in essence "on the job training" for state and federal responders to if (no, WHEN) a WMD attack does occur against a US city or cities.
This time, it was Mother Nature, and people generally knew it was coming. With a WMD, no one but the terrorists will have that luxury.

Yeah, there'd be no escape time, and about 100k or so burned up people laying in the ruins.
That's why deterrence is the only option.

Didn't law enforcement have a contingency plan? One day and the law enforcement joins the helpless?
Can't they fly in food and bring it to them?

I saw some homeboys on Fox load up a piano with all their goods and wheel it down the street. I broke down in hysterical laughter, much to the dismay of my Dad who just shook his head. They literally stole a piano, filled it up with goods and whelled it away. If these people could only put such thoughts to legitimate enterprise!!!!!!!!

OMG! First I was incredulous but now I don't know what to think. After reading about the looters shooting an officer and then reading the gall and sheer brazeness of these bottom feeders, I think someone in authority better get a grip.

I can understand food and drink. However to see a grand piano wheeled down the street loaded up with goods just gave me a belly laugh to the point it hurt. Watch FoxNews they will probably show it again.

I have no first-hand knowledge, but folks who claim such knowledge have told me that, by far, New Orleans and Chicago cops are the most corrupt nationwide. And that takes a lot, considering how many crooked cops there are out there.

This has got to be a first. Not in general terms. Statistically cops commit robbery at slightly higher levels than the general population

Rent this sometime. I'm told it's not too farfetched. Plus you get to see Dennis Quaid with his shirt off. Ellen Barkin isn't too hard on the eyes either. :-)

Statistically cops commit robbery at slightly higher levels than the general populationI don't know where you get this.
Most LEOs are head and shoulders more honest than the general population.

"Whatever happened to the old rule about looters being shot on sight?"
Democrats don't like shooting their voters.
