Oh my God...
****ALL RESIDENTS ON THE EAST BANK OF ORLEANS AND JEFFERSON REMAINING IN THE METRO AREA ARE BEING TOLD TO EVACUATE AS EFFORTS TO SANDBAG THE LEVEE BREAK HAVE ENDED. THE PUMPS IN THAT AREA ARE EXPECTED TO FAIL SOON AND 12-15 FEET OF WATER ARE EXPECTED IN THE ENTIRE EAST BANK.****

I know - but it's huge, heavy, and moved. It wasn't in the water.

"The misunderstood fact is that these items are not just lying around waiting to be used." Why not??? A levee breach was a foreseeable event from any big storm that happened to come close. Proper contingency planning dictates that these things ARE kept laying around ready to use. No excuse for the city and state not being ready for such a problem.

So do the Mods actually sit someplace and have to read all these posts? We all sit in our own homes/offices on our own schedule and read threads that interest us. We rely on the abuse reports and a few other tools we have to alert us to problems

Heavy rain in NW PA not too much wind to speak of. We're under a flood/flash flood warning . I'm on a hill so we're safe but may lose power. If I dissappear that's why. Love you all.

Cruise ships usually have a 40+ foot draft. WIth current river conditions, there's no way they can get close.

Where this
film was taken is about 1 foot above sea level. I carefully checked the topo map. It is at Bourbon and Common street, one block west of Canal Street. The water seems about 3 feet deep.

But the river is not up to the levee is it?
I don't know anything anymore other than NO seems lost to me."
As long as there are people in New Orleans fighting to save it, it isn't lost.
If everyone has to leave, it still isn't lost until we all decide not to rebuild it.
I do know what you mean, but "lost" isn't the right word, not yet, maybe not ever. I'm an optimist, and to me, this is a temporary setback.

All good points but let me take a crack.
"Most of the choppers are busy with SAR right now. Lives first, property second."
These houses were not flooded before the breech. And the more they wait, the more threatened lives - Where is water and food going to come from while these people wait for evac.
"The barges are having to proceed downriver very slowly as the Mississippi will need to be resurveyed before it is truly navigable - and there is a LOT of debris (including dropped bridge spans) in the water. "
The breech is from Lake Panchatrain which appears to be full of a variety of unsalvageable hulls that can be towed and scuttled.

My understanding THERE ARE NO BUILDINGS LEFT STANDING IN PASS CHRISTIAN, Bay St. Louis is next to it. I lived in both places on my sailboat. What I heard from Bay St. Louis is from one family. They built a house with the foundation above the high water mark of Camille. It flooded up to the roof. They had tied a small sailboat out in the yard and were able to make it to the boat. They rode the rest of the storm out in the boat. Most people had gone up to the Stennis Space Center. Bay St. Louis is where the hurricane party was during Camille. The first place I had my boat was in a marina that was about three miles or more inland. There was a building there that had survived Camille. It was up on stilts and the high water mark of Camille was still up on the ceiling on the first floor. This surge was higher than Camille probably a good eight to ten feet. Pray for these poor people.
