The morning's collection of flooding conditions in New Orleans. There were few fresh photos of other devastated areas available in the short time I had available to collect these. Will try to update this thread later.
These photos are being posted especially for the benefit of FReepers and others who may have relatives or friends in the area, and who may not be able to get images any other way.
Actually the Egyptians did, bigger and grander, a few millenia before.

Actually this is a fascinating subject, but perhaps more appropriate on a separate thread.
There are several dynamics at work. Yes, silt is getting carried out to sea, but also deposited in and around NO the whole time. The "filled-in" area is a long ways further into the gulf than it was 500 years ago. How the "new" land later settles and becomes lower than the river is a whole other dynamic.
Maybe it was a bad idea to build an orgiastic party city below sea level, eh?

For the worst-case sceanrio, look at the pictures from Gulfport, MS. And imagine that type of wind destruction on top of higher water levels.
Looking at photos of looters and saw breaking news about still rising waters and the mayor ordering all of NO evacuated.
First of all, nice going, Mayor! Talk about waiting until the cows are out before shutting the barn door!
Now, I wonder where the looters are going to store those nice plasma televisions and electronics since they have no cars to drive and their entire houses will probably be underwater soon.
Let the other nations return the billions of dollars

The amazing thing is that if and when all of this is cleaned up, property values will skyrocket and folks will be snapping it up! Seems to have happened after all the storms last year in FL.

They do have problems. A friend who was raised there said one of the problems with the older structures was chimney collapse. A little loss of integrity in the foundation and the heaviest part of the structure (the chimney) comes crashing down.
Tell that to the tourists and the Superdome refugees. That "history" seems to have come to an unfortunate end, sadly. When did the last building go up?

After Galveston Tx was destroyed by a hurricane in 1900 they built a levee and then jacked up the houses that weren't destroyed and pumped sand underneath them, an amazing operation. They raised the level of the island. Of course New Orleans is a much bigger city and I can't imagine what they can to to fix it.I am distraught over the destruction of a city I love very much.

I kind of understand, we've had leaks in the roof before that we always forgot about except when it rained.
