Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

Water is waist deep around the Superdome and still rising.
God Help these people..
Meanwhile, back on the network TV they are showing the 'soaps'
Have we seen offers of help from other countries?
RDTF---I believe I was the first one to question the 9 inches as being news worthy....but, the reason I did, was because I make a worse mistake earlier in the thread, by posting that Fox had reported 9 FEET in French Quarter, when it was really 9 INCHES...
I guess I was kind of embarrassed about reporting the wrong amount...so I questioned the validity of the news ALERT status on Fox...
SO...long story...It is all MY fault fellow freepers, now flame me but don't flame others that are repeating MY STUPID REMARKS--OKAY?
In this instance, first thing Saturday morning.
Thanks for asking.
I just got back from a lunchtime stroll in downtown Memphis. I noticed that every window that isn't under an overhang is coated with dirt. Not just a powder-thin dusting but dirt. It wasn't there yesterday. We had a Katrina remnant storm last night and then noticed this this morning. Since there isn't any major construction sites nearby, this dirt could only have come from Katrina. It must have sucked up a lot of it from all over the southeast and left it from the rains. It showed up after things dried up. I've never seen anything like this. Has anyone else noticed this? Just an interesting observation in relation to this tragedy.
Prayers for those having to deal with this.
Ok well at least someone steped up to the plate. I guess I stand corrected..
Great pic! But I suspect they saved it to wave for help. Doesn't matter, it's a great sight.
I'm not trying to defend Nagin but he was in a real rough spot on that. He knew the looting that would happen, and I guess he was trying to avoid doing it if the storm was not going to hit. A real high-wire act. Likely nobody was hoping the storm would turn more than him.
What are they going to do with it...it will just weigh them down...there is only one way out of the city.
I kinda feel sorry for the looters in a way. They are probably so poor, probably uneducated, are so desperate that at a time like this, they can only think of material posessions. It's very sad.
I am frankly amazed to learn that Freepers are in favor of looting and appear to be quite fine with leaving people in a disaster to fend for themselves because it is not ENUMERATED in the United States Constitution.
But, of course, we see these same people on ALL the FR threads, telling us we're not "real" "true" conservatives, don't we?
Actually I've heard (late last night) that the sick in the SD were going to be moved to the Convention Center, which is high on the river levee, as it is a more suitable facility for that, and storm protection is no longer needed. Would guess that most of the sick being brought in will really go there, not the SD.
This situation in NO is a prime example of what happens when you use your liberal agendas to keep people down-and-out.
Louisiana is pretty much the last democratic bastion in the South and made up of a whole lot of dirt poor, uneducated or poorly-educated people. They listen to the Sharptons or Jacksons who tell them they are poor because of the "white" man... sad reality .... also the place with the very worst crime rate in the country...
If that is the case, then they do not need to rebuild there. Maybe somewhere else?
"They are meeting at a Sams club... didn't catch the intersection."
Airline Hwy. and Earhart Blvd.; Metairie basically.
Anecdotal info re Bay st Louis but the source is trustworthy...
Disturbing news, I just heard from a friend that had family in Bay St Louis that there are many, many dead there, almost everything near beach gone. They are going through rubble and marking the doors with X's because they have no other way to deal with them at this point, this is going to end up being ground zero and likely "hundreds and hundreds" of casualties. He said maybe thousands, but this is not an official statement.
Houses 15 and 20' high and there is nothing left-- no sign there was ever a building.

I am beyond ashamed at this point. I haven't seen any of them taking bottles of water, but shoes, and non-necessities...breaking into homes!! what scum!"
Shoes, more than one pair even, can be survival items in a case like this. The mud and water suck them off your feet or cause them to fall apart. Houses? Whatever it takes. Survival comes first. Don't worry about the rest. Darwin's law will take care of most who are stealing anything other than survival gear.
