Katrina Live Thread, Part X

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

Being from NO, both our families and all our friends are still there. We know of some that evacuated (my mom, sister, brother - have heard from no one since they evacuated). And there's so many other siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends - that we were unable to contact everyone before storm hit. So we don't know who left, who stayed.

I'm sure I lost my house in Slidell. My dad passed away last year and we kept the house because he built the whole thing with his own two hands. That was the last "piece" of him I had and believe I've lost that too. But trying to keep all in perspective and if all our loved ones have gotten out of this with their lives - I will consider myself blessed.

Try not to worry.

I know this sounds odd, but I have been on the inside of a disaster (a tornado and flood but nothing like this one!) and I was so busy dealing with salvaging stuff and cleaning up and getting tarps on the roof and dealing with insurance adjusters and all that, that I FORGOT to call my family to let them know I was O.K.! I felt really stupid and sheepish afterwards, but it never crossed my mind that they didn't know I was all right . . . I mean, I knew I was o.k.!

Prayers that your folks are o.k., just busy and forgetful!

From WLTV website (sorry of already posted):

Jefferson Parish under Martial Law. No one being allowed into New Orleans.

Levee breaches are causing rising water in New Orleans. WWL-TV studios are being evacuated due to rising water in the French Quarter. WWL will begin broadcasting from LSU as soon as possible and we will be attempting to stream on the web.

Mayor Ray Nagin reports the Twin Span Bridge is "totally destroyed" and that 80% of the city is underwater. Click for streaming video.

Northshore Report: Slidell: extensive flood damage, impassable roads; Covington and Mandeville: extensive wind damage - entire parish without power. Click for story.

If Hurricane Andrew didn't change the insurance business, then this storm won't either. Insurance companies are prepared to deal with catastrophic losses like this periodically. In fact, that's precisely why they are in business -- to deal with catastrophic losses.

However, I do expect to see one major change as a result of this catastrophe (if this hasn't been done already). Property and casualty insurance policies for customers who live in a flood plain like New Orleans will probably include waivers against any claims that result from a flood caused by the failure of a dike or levee.

Insurance companies generally don't raise their premiums as a result of disasters like this. What they would prefer to do is limit their exposure by simply refusing to insure buildings in certain areas.

I just tried it again and it opened (after waiting a while). Try viewing it with another video player (like Windows Media, Real Player, or Quicktime).

I read somewhere that some of the pumps are 72" in diameter. That would take something on the scale of a locomotive to operate.

I also read on Sunday that if "doomsday" New Orleans scenario happened, it would take up to 6 months to pump out. They would have to bring in portable pumps and pump into the Mississippi until they could reach and repair the mains.

I think another problem is that the pumps are ELECTRIC. No electricity = no pumps

Well this is true.

But if they have to rebuild the things or the system, maybe they could put up a generator or something and have pumps that work under water.

Hey, I'm no engineer. But my hands are shaking this morning as I see all this stuff on TV. It's waaaaay worse than I was thinking.

I heard for hours that NO dodged the bullet and yet right now the water's rising and they can do nothing about it. Fires are blooming and people are stuck. Ambulance crews are missing.

I'm in shock, total shock.
