A driver for the Rev. Al Sharpton led Ellis County sheriff's deputies on a nine-mile chase at speeds up to 110 mph before state troopers stopped the car, authorities said.
The driver was rushing Sharpton to the airport after his visit with anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan on Sunday at her camp outside President Bush's ranch in Crawford. The car carrying Sharpton and two other passengers was clocked doing 110 mph in a 65 mph zone on Interstate 35 in Ellis County in North Texas, said Lt. Danny Williams.
The car ignored deputies' attempts to stop it and continued speeding and weaving in and out of traffic before it was stopped, Williams said.
Calls Monday to Sharpton's spokeswoman were not immediately returned. A spokesman for his attorney, Michael Hardy, referred inquiries to the spokeswoman.
Deputies arrested Jarrett Barton Maupin, 43, of Phoenix. Maupin told the officers he was hurrying to get Sharpton to the airport. Deputies impounded the rented 2005 Lincoln.
Williams said his officers offered Sharpton and the other, unidentified passengers a ride to a hotel across the highway, but they declined and walked there instead.
Maupin posted a total of $1,000 in bonds on charges of evading arrest with a vehicle and reckless driving.

Agree. And double agree with the celebrity types and the liability issues. Even when armed escorts are required, they are usually contracted out. Thus freeing them of the liability.
Good post.

Does not matter if he's an employee, son, husband or godfather of Al. The driver is ultimately responsible for control of the car. Short of a gun to your head, the driver is responsible for following traffic laws. Period. And that's what I said earlier. It just didn't appear to be appreciated by some. Oh well.
Thanks for that.

Almost new F-150, I think the guy was on cruise control cause we sort of sat on 100 or slightly less. If it had been any faster the chip/module would have started cutting out.

Maybe your right. That was probably a little too explicit. But I'd bet it's right on the money though.

"Does not matter if he's an employee"
Criminally no...
Unless the State can prove that AL conspired with the driver.
Civilly yes it does.
Especially with Al in the car.
Tacit permission is an acceptable in civil court.
Unless Al can prove that he tried to stop the driver.

One thing I don't quite understand here.
In Los Angeles for instance, in a vehicle pursuit like this one, they conduct a high risk, felony stop tactics, once the vehicle is stopped, and all occupants of the vehicle are ordered out at *gun* point and interviewed to determine what crimes may be involved, or what involvement the passengers may have had in any crimes prior to the pursuit. I am sure you've seen it on television many times.
The only thing I can think of is once they realized sharpton was a passenger they didn't want to push it, due to obvious reasons. But I can tell you, if this happened in LA, all occupants would have been ordered out at gun point and been face down, once the vehicle stopped.
Bottom line is, like you said, the driver is ultimately responsible for operating the vehicle within the law. Period.

Civilly yes it does.Hello? Who is the plaintiff? There is no criminal case against Al, and their are not two parties for a civil case. Next?

You don't own a business do you?
I am held both civilly and even criminally liable if an employee is told to do something illegal.
It's called acts by employer in conspiracy.
Many employers go to jail for the acts of their employees.
Happens every day.
Not that I believe Al will be held accountable.
But he could.

Stay on track. Don't confuse this discussion with the fact that we'd BOTH like to see Al pay for SOMETHING...ANYTHING.
But we're almost there. You've attained a plateau, you agree that there's no criminal case against Al.
Now, don't get off on a tangent. Just name who the plaintiff would be for the civil case and I'm on board with you. (Hint: There isn't one, which is why he can't be held responsible in a civil suit either.)

Most traffic citations are civil.
When a driver or employee gets caught running a red light by a camera the state comes after the owner of the vehicle for the offense, the employer. In some states if a driver is drunk the state impounds the owners vehicle and assesses huge fines not only for the driver but the owner as well. If the owner fails to pay he is then arrested.

If someone was injured like the Law Enforcement Officer
or another motorist during this escapade
it would be Al's A$$.

Sorry, IW. As much as we'd LIKE al to be held responsible, he's got no criminal liability.I suppose you're correct, and it would be difficult to prove legally at any rate. I would like to see him held accountable, but there are a lot of things in life, I'd like to see yet never will...

My daughter goes to the high school mentioned in the article, Saguaro. However, I think the driver was actually this guy's FATHER, since they listed the age as 47. He's a piece of work too, IMO.

It's a shame some brave soul didn't "take one for the team" and pull out in front of Al, to sue his pants off. But alas, no intercept was to be had! LOL! (I doubt I'd be brave enough to pull out in front of that much MASS going that fast!)

Good catch.
Jarrett Maupin Sr.
Also one of Al Sharpton's employees (NAN).
My mistake.

disrespected, all kinds of stuff that you've had to deal
with your whole life crops up."

Oops and thanks. Looks like it was the kids father.
Well if he is a good candidate, he can run on the "If I am elected, I will see that fathers will not have to drive 110 mph to get to the airport on time! I will pour millions into better transportation, etc".

Al "tawana" Sharpton, the race hustler. This POS is a disgusting human being but guilty white liberals kiss his black ass and moderate democrats are afraid of him. Imagine if the republicans had let David Duke run for president? There is NO difference between Sharptoon and Duke except the color of their skin.
