Warner will not seek Senate seat in '06 (Virginia)
Associated Press ^ | August 29, 2005

RICHMOND, Va. Governor Mark Warner will announce tomorrow that he will NOT challenge U-S Senator George Allen's re-election bid next year.

That's the word this evening from the state Democratic Party chairman, C-Richard Cranwell.

Cranwell says he believes Warner is intent on ending his term as governor on what Cranwell calls "a good note."

The decision would free Warner to explore a possible presidential bid after he finishes the single, non-renewable term as governor to which the state Constitution limits him.

Warner declined to speak to reporters today about his plans.

Cranwell said the governor will discuss his plans publicly for the first time tomorrow morning during his monthly appearance on W-T-O-P radio in Washington.

Will he be the anti-Hillary in the Demo Primaries or is he running to be her VP?

Allen v Warner in 2008?

Warner is eyeing the Presidency, no doubt in my mind.

While this is good news, my initial hope was that John Warner was announcing his retirement. We need a bona fide conservative patriot as the other Senator from Virginia, not someone who, through philosophy, temperament, or old age, gives aid and comfort to the enemy during wartime.

Listen to his speeches, he invokes Hillary Clinton by name, and almost every single time....takes a few shots at her.

While I think the junior senator from New York will get the nomination, there is no doubt that the way Governor Warner is taking shots at her, he won't be getting the VP slot.

I get the feeling all the other dems who run in 2008 are just going to hammer her, as soon as they see its safe for one of them to do it. (and one of them is doing now).

I actually think that she will end up having a very tough fight for the nomination, with the battle lines being between her and her zombies, and the dems with some sense who want to nominate a current or former popular dem governor from a Red state.

Thing is, the dem gov from a red state is their better shot at the presidency. I have a very contrarian view on this, I admit, but somehow, some way I just don't see her getting the nod (much to her chagrin).

Wait and see.

But will the radical liberal primary voters put pragmatism over their supposed principles?

They did in 2004, when they dropped Dean in favor of the more electable Kerry.

Whoops! Didn't read closely enough. I thought this was in reference to John Warner!

If by late 2007/early 2008 it's obvious Warner doesn't have a chance of getting the Democratic nomination for President, he can always challenge Elizabeth Taylor's ex for the other Senate seat from Virginia. Warner vs. Warner.

John Warner is not up for election in 2006, George Allen is. While Allen would still be in a good position to defeat Mark Warner, the Democrats would pour money into a campaign to defeat him, just as they are doing to defeat Republican Kilgore in this year's race for governor.

While I tend to share your dislike for John Warner (particularly for his backstabbing Oliver North and other conservative Republican candidates), he is better than any Democrat.

I sure wish Ollie would run again. He would have beaten Robb back in '94 if not for John Warner and Marshall Coleman.

Many Freepers think she can't win the general election and the Democrats should be encouraged to nominate her. I say that just as the NJ Democratic Party disgraced itself by renominating the crook Robert Torricelli for Senate, the national Democratic Party must, on principle, be told that it would be a disgrace to nominate the perpetrator of Filegate. She must not even be nominated for the presidency.

Like I said, I don't think she will win the nomination.

And nominating commie traitor John Kerry was not a disgrace? And Slick, twice?

And if he loses to Allen in '06 he can't pretend he can beat him in '08.

I didn't say he would win the presidency. I wouldn't be surprised to see him win the nomination.

Of course he will no seek to oppose Senator Allen in 2006 because his chance of losing is over 80% and hence his chance to run for President in 2008 will be finished.
