Man Arrested in Practical Joke Gone Awry

Savannag, GA - A Savannah man was arrested after he told a 13-year-old girl to hand a note to a bank teller threatening a holdup, police said.

Michael Lyons, 45, told police that he and a group of girls celebrating his daughter's birthday were trying to play a practical joke. The note said "Give me all of your money, this is a stick up," according to a police report.

While Lyons was getting money out of an ATM on Friday, the girl went into the bank and handed the note to a teller.

The teller sounded the bank's alarm and police and FBI surrounded the building searching for suspected burglars.

Instead, they found Lyons and the group of girls.

Lyons was charged with criminal attempt of robbery by intimidation, said Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police spokesman Bucky Burnsed.

"You can't yell fire in a crowded theater, can't joke about a bomb in your luggage at the airport, and you can't write notes to cashier that say 'This is a stick up,'" Burnsed said.

You try working as a teller and tell me how funny you find it. This is a serious matter and I hope the dope gets 5-8 to think about it.

That is fine with me a long as it is out of your pocket. The child loses a father, though.

"Lyons was charged with criminal attempt of robbery by intimidation"

"Translation?"

My guess is that for this character, planning ahead isn't his forte. And I don't mean Fabian.

Considering some of the replies on this thread, perhaps I should explain that. See, folks, Fabian, the 50s "star" was known by only his first name, but his last name was Forte. So if you'll kindly indulge me, it's a play on words, linking Fabian with Forte and it. .. .

Oh, never mind.

Your original comment was as funny as the note the guy handed to the teller.

LOL!, I'm glad I didn't say that.

He gets the moron of the day award.

"I think more people will get it.

Well, I would. At the risk of belaboring the obvious (an occasional necessity around here), my comment was directed at the consequentially challenged Mr. Lyons and not at your comment.

Practical jokes are rarely funny, and never practical. This one is true to form.

Holy crap! You think this is a funny stunt! Yeah, it's about as funny as calling in a bomb threat to the Superdome in the middle of a hurricane. This guy must have an IQ of about four.

It WAS funnier than that.

The cops should lighten up. This is a very funny stunt.

I live in a city that sees over 100 bank robberies a year. I was in one once. NOT FUNNY.

The original comment wasn't meant to be funny, it was intended to . . .

Forget it.
