I've despised the red cross since I was a G.I. in Viet Nam. A friend had to go home on emergency leave, red cross "loaned" him the cost of his plane ticket and charged him interest on the "loan".

Red cross representatives on every base I served were treated like officers (membership in the "O" club etc.) and treated the enlisted like we were scum.

MS Gov. Haley Barbor - "The damage is catastrophic. There are areas that we still can't get into. There are areas that got 6-7 feet of water this time that didn't flood during Camille." He is sounding rather pissed that so many people stayed.

Where is the Red Cross risking their lives in flood waters?

Their lives are never at risk.

I can believe that, they were reporting Dauphin Island was under water last night when katrina was still 150 Miles out to sea.

Rotation apparently never touched down and the Tornado warning here has been cancelled. Clouds outside the house are going nuts, Pouring rain, and a lot of wind for about 10 minutes. Starting to go back to a steady 20-25 MPH breeze again.

Some organizations just have better structures and rules than others...doesn't mean that the volunteers are bad. Sometimes they are given bad rules. Sometimes it's organization politics.

I will be contributing, and trying to get others to contribute, and if I can get down there to work, I will do that too, but if I think a group is badly organized or run, I am not going to be dishonest about it.

LA Gov. Blanco now on. Wonder if Chrissy Matthews has the guts to ask her if she thinks that everyone has had a "positive experience"...

No recent news

That's the kind of stuff that's bothering me. The ones we are hearing from are bad enough but where we are NOT hearing news has to have been hit much worse.

I heard a weather person yesterday say they wouldn't be surprised if Grande Isle gets majorly resculptured. I guess I will have to wait to see.

Regarding Grande Isle:

I also heard about the 7 people who weathered it out. None of them were accounted for. In that small report I heard Grande Isle has effectively cut in two.

Actually, you can give blood at your local hospital. Some even deduct a few dollars from your or someone else's hospital bill for donations.

Perhaps you two missed the part where I offered up prayers for those in Mississippi and Alabama. If so, you would see that my praise for the mercy on New Orleans was tempered with prayers for others in the path of the storm.

Am I horrified by the destruction of thousands of homes? Yes. Am I grateful that my daughter in Fort Walton Beach did not lose hers? Yes.

Since I have relatives in Gulfport, I have every right to praise the hand of God for sparing the lives of thousands of New Orleans residents. We have just heard from my sister's husband's brother in Gulfport, and he is still alive. Will I praise God for mercy upon my relatives? Yes. Will I weep for the lives of those who may have been taken by the storm? Yes.

Yes. I can both praise God and weep. Praise for those whose lives were saved today, tears for those who will never again see the beautiful white sands and turquoise waters of the very Gulf that took their lives...

Last night about 9pm a news channel reporter was giving a live report from Dauphin Island, and Max Mayfield, who was standing by as part of a group interview, basically chewed him out to get the heck off the island ASAP.

The Plan that we kept hearing New Orleans had was to let some people fend for themselves, apparently.

Oh, and to meet with lawyers.

I haven't been following these threads this afternoon, I needed sleep.

But I recently heard an interview with the Director of the USS Alabama, who said he and his Staff ALWAYS stay on board the Alabama during a Hurricane.

So I imagine they have communications?
