Same here, but flares won't help much (unless you want to set off a gas main explosion), and loudspeakers on boats are out since there's no light to navigate by.
Maybe choppers, but it's too dark to really see well, and you'd have to be at such low altitudes....
Because of the depth of the city, breaking the levee on the other side lets in water from the Mississippi. I searched around on Google Earth. This is what the mayor must have meant by 80% of the city underwater. It just had not filled in yet.
The AquaDams® required only two days to install.
1354. TU Med Ctr rising water
by TUGrad91, 8/30/05 2:32 ET
VP of TU Med Ctr just reported on CNN that 17th st canal levee breach is 2 blocks long and water is rising at a rapid pace on Canal--"white caps" on Canal--Planning to evacuate hospital if water rises to second floor generators!

Tulane University Hospital**LAKEVIEW by phaire51, 8/30/05
ON CNN, 17th street levee breech is 2 block long and the "water is rising so fast" I can't even explain it...this is in LAKEVIEW. Water is rising about 1 inch about every 5 minutes...running towards Canal Street side....Charity Hospital is CURRENTLY being evacuating....writing as the audio is coming in.....IMMEDIATELY...please confirm...air evacuation
You know you gave me a good idea I didnt think about checking the local scanner yahoo groups in the area
Yes, the best I can tell My experience in NO is limited but I have driven the shore of the lake a couple of times.
Thank-you. Prayers up for everyone touched by this damned storm.
:) Glad you're all safe - praying you all continue to stay that way! I'd have my littlest in bed with me, no doubt. This storm is a scary one to watch - I can't imagine having it head near me - even at 1/4 strength.
Karl, she said it had happened in the last two hours!
Hammond Highway. Look at where the canal comes off Lake Ponchatrain and passes under Hammond Highway. That canal is the 17th street canal. Report that the airport is now under water also.
yes, that appears to be the case.
it is a coule of miles, too, through lakeside NOLA.
I expect the Garden District is now a underwater from the lake levee to the river levee.
I couldnt find a live feed....
there is a batonrougescanner or something like that.
I got your five ... I've been through Andrew ... things don't just don't turn around that quickly. And we didn't have near the major infrastructure destruction that this area is suffering .. I mean major vital segments of this city and area are destroyed or gravely at risk right now.
Thank you very much; not ever having been there, this is all confusing to me -- especially the different neighborhood names, if that is what they are.
Did a yahoo yellow pages search on "Tulane medical center" and all were either downtown, on the Miss. River, or in Metarie, not close to the lake or canal st., or the 17th street canal, other than downtown.
Seems like everything is sourcing back to this single phone call.
If the engineers say the breach can't be plugged then send a little Dutch boy to do the job!
How about Joran Van der Sloot?
Exhausted, I think.
The problem is more water on TOP of dangerous flooding already. There is simply NO place for all the water to go.
I check the Lousiana scanner group oh they are asking her about oh well she she to confirm something is going on.
yep: they're SCREWN
time to hop in the pirogue and nous allons tha hell outta there
