CNN now confirms 50 deaths.
Ok.
I wish I could sleep..
Have your classes started?
The interview with the lady CNN reporter was riveting.
I would say that she is probably stressed out seeing all of the destruction.
I don't think we'd sleep very restfully, friend.
Are you listening to that online?
Wasn't that just awful? Did you hear them talking about the dogs being wrapped in electric wires and being electrocuted?
Yes, I had my first International Relations seminar today. Nothing tomorrow.
I ran to the dorm lobby to watch that. I have to say, very moving report.
Look, part of the job of a reporter is to stay as unemotional as possible, to be able to deliver facts in a level-headed manner.
But, emotion in such huge stories as this can be frankly refreshing to see.
She was doing her darndest to keep from being overly emotional, but she had to show some emotion, and that's okay.
It is things like this that make me want to continue pursuing a journalism career. This is when the job is worth it....when you can help people see just how awful an event is, when you can inform people of a horrendous loss of life.....and many lives that will never be the same.
God be with those folks down there....I just hope that the death toll in NO is not close to the 50 dead in MS.
I am madder than hell that they didn't order a mandatory evac and shut down all businesses on Saturday, to convey the seriousness. More and more evidence of poor pre-planning, poor pre-positioning. Things go wrong, and every situation is different, but there is no excuse for such poor pre-planning. It isn't rocket science. They sent 20 police officers home in that district that is now flooded, to await a shift change, but they ended up on their rooftops to be rescued because they weren't given boats or sent to a staging area with a boat. Inexcusable. Only having independent backup generators for a single pump. The main one, but still. Should have been the first priority after the pumps failed several years ago in a close call. Using the Superdome as a shelter was a good idea, but as of Brian Williams 5:30 report tonight, not a single announcement had been made to the crowd in 24+ hours, not even when they were having roof problems. Crisis mgmt 101 tells ya that keeping a large crowd of refugees in the total dark when it comes to info is a recipe for trouble.
This lays at the feet of many LA leaders and planners, not just the current mayor and gov.
There will be rescues going on for days.
Oh God that'swhat got me. Imagine all the pets left behind. They could very well starve before anyone can get to them.
I cant sleep. I cant get these images to go away.
searches suspended
Many, many waiting to be rescued. A couple of hours ago the CNN cameraman that went on some rescue missions said that the estimates he heard was 500-1000. However they also were told that the area they saw was not the worst.
But you know what, they may be miserable and waiting, but they are alive, and will be rescued.
The reporter telling about the people screaming and rescue teams not being able to help them got me.
I can't even imagine the horror of being trapped on top of a roof in the dark with water all around and rising.
where did you hear that the searches are suspended?
i was right!
I agree with every single word of that.
When people like us, sitting here at our computers, discussed ALL of that DAYS ago, what the hell is going on with the leaders of that state and that city?
When Blanco was asking us to pray for the winds to diminish, she should have been shutting down every single thing within 100 miles of that coast.
As I said days ago to one of the many people who said this storm was overhyped, "It will turn" is NOT a plan!!!!!!!
It's just inexcusable.
And not one person on this forum thinks that the 57 confirmed deaths (7 in Florida, 50 here so far) is going to be the end of it.
I can't either.....I have so much homework for tomorrow (just reading though), but I feel like I am watching something I can't miss.....a horrible event unfolding still....the waters are actually still RISING since they can't fix the breaches until they find them!
