No bear suit...the only effective defense against bears that I know of is a gun. When you hike outside of the city in Alaska, it's best to carry a gun in your backpack (or two guns if you prefer, in case the first one jams.) If you encounter a bear, stay quiet then back slowly away from the bear and hope he doesn't notice you and he's not hungry. Use the gun as a last resort and aim right between his beady eyes.

That reminds me of the Fish and Game poster urging people to wear bells on their shoes and to pack pepper spray when in Brown Bear country.

Down Further on the memo was a guide to ID bear dropping. Black Bear was small, purple, and full of berries. Brown Bear poop had bells and spelled like pepper.

My son encountered a bear this summer. It walked right by him. Fortunately, it didn't see HIM or I would be saying my late son---scary.
