From Sun Herald city editor Kate Magandy, in Long Beach at 10:a.am CDT
As Hurricane Katrina continued to pound South Mississippi Monday morning there were unconfirmed reports that there was water up to the second floor at the Beau Rivage Casino in Biloxi and that there was water standing in the Grand Casino Biloxi.
There were reports of boats floating north of the beach line of Highway 90 in Gulfport about half a mile west of the Copa Casino.
Power outages were reported at about 100,000 customers as of 8 a.m.
In Gulfport, windows were blown out and the business district was partially underwater. The damage was described by Fire Chief Pat Sullivan as "massive." Waves were breaking across US 90 and there was water standing in the Gulfport Library.
The Jackson County Emergency Management Agency had to relocate to the courthouse after the roof came off their building in downtown Pascagoula. The roof also came off the gym at St. Martin High School and there were reports of flooding in the Chipley area of Pascagoula.
Wind gusts of 90 mph were reported at Hurley, and a tornado was sighted there about 8 a.m.
A longtime Coast resident, Magandy said, "Hurricane Elena (1985) was the worst I remember, and this is much worse. The wind is unbelievable. I just heard a pine tree snap ... it didn't creak and groan (like they sometimes do) it just snapped."
7:30 a.m. CDT
The wind is whipping now. The roof on the building is creaking. You can hear the building's joints straining.
Fire Chief Pat Sullivan succesfully rescued a woman and her four kids from their apartment after the roof ripped off, according to scanner traffic.
Lots of people still in their homes now and the shelters were pretty much all at capacity last night.
There was a seagull in the parking lot of the Sun Herald, desperately clinging to life this morning. A reporter who saw the bird said it was amazing that the thing held on in some of these gusts. It managed to find a slightly less windy spot behind a tire. He said he hoped the car stayed there.

Prayers going up BS. How are you doing?

I complained to FoxNews for cutting off the President as he said "I want to make some comments on immigration".
No, they were not able to give us news - must show the same old replays and obsess with the hurricane.
Of course, my email was returned.
Just yesterday Brit lambasted Bush for not getting his message out, he must do a better job. Now we see why - our news sources decide what he gets to speak on and when.
I am furious. I also called the station to complain and got a recorder.

Looting is not advisable behavior under any circumstances. Especially when the owner is armed. If I was the Chief of New Orleans PD, I would recommend martial law.

FNC: Louisiana residents could be without power for a month.

Looting is looting. The government and insurance companies will take care of those who file claims and fill out applications for assistance. It is NEVER permissable to help yourself to other people's property.

It is NEVER permissable to help yourself to other people's property. What? If that were true liberals would be without power.
To: Peach
FNC also corrected the number of those without power from 75,000 to 750,000! Ouch.

They didn't dodge the bullet, the just got shot with a smaller caliber.

On the other hand, if they're taking off with TVs, computers, or other luxuries, it's pretty clear what they're doing.

Hmmm... I would classify TV's and Stereo's as a stretch for immediate survival supplies.
In a looter situation, the FIRST thing to go are high ticket luxury items such as jewelry and electronics. Then clothing and finally food. The wild card is any firearm (i.e. sporting goods stores) or ammunition. They trump anything.
It is for this reason that the NG usually patrols "locked and loaded" in looter suppression. I can't wait for the Posse Commitatus screams from the libs. Reality is, that the NG is functioning as a "state entity" and is exempt from posse commitatus.
I guess it is evil for me to look forward to the thinning of gene pool by the surgical removal of looters.

If they let owners back in there won't be any looting.

They didn't dodge the bullet, the just got shot with a smaller caliber. I disagree. Like I said, I hope this isn't the prevailing attitude as even more people will stay for one that goes a bit farther west. Looks, to me, like Gulfport got the worst of it. I suspect we'll be hearing about that soon.

I agree - Fox has determined what news we get to hear.
They cut off the President as he commented "and I want to say this about immigration".
No, we can only hear round the clock hurricane today.
I want the hurricane news and my prayers are with all victims BUT I fully expect Fox News to be able to put other news in as well - especially to not cut off the President of the United States when he is going to make comments on Immigration.
