Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

Yeah, but New Madrid seems to get an appropriate level of publicity.
I have been off the board, but working all day from home with Fox News on in the background.
So, are my wife and I the only ones who think this storm will not be nearly as destructive as all the networks are predicting? The networks are clearly smelling huge ratings with all of this hype. The anchors were even personally attacking people standing by the shore of the gulf. The talking heads were dumbfounded that the people dared to defy the networks' hype machine!!! Of course, they didn't criticize their camerman and reporter standing in the same place. Really funny stuff.
Anyhow, are we the only ones, or are we just mean, cynical conservatives?
I like to mix the cinnamon and sugar on top of the butter before I toast the bread (in a toaster oven).
I just noticed Drudge has a "Full Links" at the bottom of the Katrina links list. It's got tons of links to anything Katrina related.
Looks like you're the It for now :-)
Off for a little lie down for a bit.
"It is a well known fact,,any disaster discussion on FR is only done with recipes sprinkled in..."
And I've got a crockpot full of beans to go along with the prayers going up as I've skimmed all these threads today.
We Canadians are used to heftier barley products, I guess. ;^)
The New Orleans radar still shows it bearing down right on top of the city. Some of the heavier bands nearer the center of the storm are starting to enter the city. Conditions south of the city look very bad already, and getting much worse rapidly.
Stoli Rasberry and club soda on ice with with 2 tablespoons of OJ - tastes like fruit punch and very low carbs.
FWIW, Mexico and Israel sent search specialists to help at the WTC.
But, let's be realistic- we don't really need anyone's help to deal with disasters in this country. We are capable of handling them on our own.
definitely noted... lol! i actually used the word "elephantine" as a size description... wouldn't that call for at least a grin??
The tanks that held the Dolphins were at risk before decades ago in the last Hurricane this size to hit N.O. but the other areas of that Aquarium are safe.
I wondered about the pool water too.
They will have the Dolphin's Careproviders wit them as long as possible around the clock.
Sounds like N.O. is going to be one big Honeypot after the storm.
"Why is it Bush's fault? "
Bush Cheney Haliburton Global Warming Oil Prices, etc etc etc.
Just wait.
Not a bad way to learn on FR, just ask, and 4 people step up to the plate and deliver!
Let's cool it with the rhetoric on this thread.
Just heard from someone overseas in ME that can access CNN International and people there are transfixed with this storm also.
That is how I fix mine -- now I am getting hungry. What I would really like tonight is a funnel cake!
Mine are on the Miss./Alabama border. I know calling them and pestering would not be the thing to do.
Still pretty calm here just north of I-10 in Baldwin County AL.
Some swimming pools by the sea are salt water pools, not chlorinated.
