Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

I concur with you that they seem to be not ready for prime time, and they messed up by not getting their crap together Friday and setting up evacuation. It seems like they were waiting for an adult to show up to get the lead out of their butts. I am not surprised, Louisiana is a very corrupt state and N.O. is beyond corrupt. Who in the hell bears responsibility? Having worked for a Municipal Government and the Federal Government I know there has to be leadership and not useless freaking overpaid officials. I just hope to God that their ineptness and stupidity does not cause 10's of thousands of deaths. There are so many wonderful people in Louisiana that do not deserve their fate dictated by idiots.

Nothing wrong with it. Would depend on how much the taxpayers are on the hook. A 50/50 split between taxpayers and team owners could be an acceptable arrangement. If taxpayers pay 100 percent of the cost, the team owners get a free stadium. Probably wouldn't go over very well in most parts of the country.

YEp. my prediction from this morning is looking pretty close. Crossing Mouth of the Mississippi, passing just E of NO thereby causing Lake P to overflow into the bowl, and then obliterating Gulfport-Biloxi.

Re: the Superdome. I heard in an earlier broadcast that it's sitting on land that's 25 feet above sea level. That should mitigate the flooding.

And Shep is scared - very scared. I hope he doesn't pay the utimate price for accepting this assignment.

I pray for him and everybody else stuck there, even if they stayed voluntarily against all reason and logic.

And I guess in your estimation, black can't be intelligent, either, right?

Go peddle your brand of racism elsewhere.

Also how come they do no have military C-130s airlifting those people who cannot get out? The ride would be quite uncomfortable, but that seems better than sitting out a Cat-5.

Having flown in C-130s, you could probably fit 100 people in there tops - with most of them sitting on the metal floor. For 100,000 people, you'd need 1,000 flights in the space of about 24 hours. I don't think we even had that many flights going at one time during the Berlin Airlift.

The mayor seems incredibly subdued to me. Either he is on antidepressants or he is one incredibly cool customer.

He's not worried. He knows he can always blame the aftermath on President Bush. The media, dutifully, will lap it up.

No, no, you don't go to the top floor of a highrise with this kind of wind. 4th or 5th floor would be better.

BTW, Sheriff of Jefferson Parish is saying his 911 center has been shut down, due to the building being deemed unable to withstand 80mph winds. He also said his deputies would be out and about as long as they deemed it safe for them to be out. On WWL-TV live feed.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff Lee: expects 3-5 ft of flooding; large % of his people have left; curfew at dark; all stores closed; if you're out driving will be challenged and arrested; deputys will have to come in fairly soon;911 people all left and 911 shut down because building too weak;east side of Harvey canal will be flooded; will be using high-wheel army surplus vehicles;this will be worst storm;fortunately able to predict and most people have left town.

Hi Peach, I sure am glad I am not living on my boat in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi now. If I was still down there, I would have probably made a run to south Texas or somewhere out to sea. Glad I didn't have to make that choice.

I think the window of opportunity is just about closed.

Only "just about"? The latest shots of the I-10 logjam that the cable soup was showing earlier now show some standing water on the road in between camera shakes.

At this point, I just want to wake up and discover that this was all a bad dream

My body ran outta gas so I had to do exactly that for a couple hours.
Sorry Dog, it didn't work, this thread's still here and I haven't seen any 'nevermind' posts yet...

What comes up the Delaware is what is referred to as 'lighters'. Smaller tankers which lighten the load from supertankers off shore, 50 miles out. They were also going to dredge the river from 42 feet to a depth of 45 feet. Ships run aground frequently in the river but you only hear of the ones which get stuck.

The winds from this will do a job on the lower windows of the Dome. That is a good thing because it will help gradually equalize the pressure without having a topping effect on the roof.

Maybe.

Amazing that there is so little reporting on the subject of the Dome's vunerability.
