It's not a horrendously bad idea. Stadiums and their surrounding facilities are great for Civil Defense and natural disaster purposes. One of the things that went down the tubes with the demise of the CD system was comprehensive plans and facilities for dealing with this sort of thing. Stadiums used to be part of these plans - look at the few remaining older stadiums and you should be able to find where the CD signs used to be bolted to them.

Stadiums can provide command centers, distribution centers for supplies, shelter, landing areas for aircraft, space for morgues, and many other critical services that really don't have any other places to go.

People always say--well--all we can do is pray. What in the WORLD is more powerful than God--and right now we need ALL the prayer warriors on FreeRepublic praying that our Lord send His mightiest angels to do battle with this storm. Prayer is not a last resort--it is a first resort--and with this storm--the only resort! Prayer cover up!!

That is a beautiful photo. I'm praying that you will see it again, just like you remember.

Also praying for everyone on that coast: residents of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, also Florida and Texas. And for all who have family there.

it could happen.

but it would need an act of Congress....I think....

Although an executive order would work like GOLD at least temporarily.....

" How do you leave your dog or cat behind"

I would never leave my dog behind. I would have been gone yesteday and headed far out even if I had to sleep in my car. All shelters have that rule, I learned that in California earthquake situations.

METAR KMSY 282053Z 06016G23KT 7SM BKN038 BKN047 32/24 A2961

Translation: At 2053Z (4:53 pm EDT), Louis Armstrong International had winds out of 060 degrees (ENE) at 16 knots gusting 23, visibility 7 miles, ceiling broken 3800 feet, broken 2700 feet, temperature 32C, dewpoint 24C, barometric pressure 29.61. That's flyable...or it was as of an hour ago. The window's basically closed, because in a couple hours, it *won't* be flyable.

FOX just predicted the eye will pass about 15 miles East of NO.

That pushes the lake back over town.

Worst case scenario.

Pressure is up a MB in the latest Vortex Data Message....

I am REALLY hoping for some kind of eyewall replacement cycle. Anything to get the storm to weaken.

I went to a Microsoft developers convention this year. The men's rooms had the lines, the women could just walk in. But IT is a kind of anti-universe.

I work in software in the aerospace industry. It's great being female- don't often have to worry about restrooms.

Shep said he went somewhere and said a prayer.

As well he should. I do hope that all the reporters make it through this ok.

If I lived in Louisiana, I'd be real worried. The governor and the mayor of New Orleans do not look competent. In fact, the mayor looks and sounds as if he might assume the fetal position any moment. He says the dumbest things! The governor has that deer in the headlights look. If she's a republican, I'm ashamed, but I'd bet the farm she's a dim dem.

I won't be surprised if those people lined up to get into the dome riot before long. And just as troubling, the idiot partygoers still roaming Bourbon Street. I think they got looting on their minds.

This is very scary to watch.

Bastardi has called it right for the Raleigh area, wrt ice and snow storms, when everybody else was calling it the other way. He's been right often enough that he's very much worth listening to.

The main problem with high rise hotels is that the windows do not open. So once the A/C goes off in a hot, humid situation, the conditions can become stifling.
