Prayers for everyone, especially those who must for some reason stay. I was caught up in Hurricane Betsy back in the mid sixties. I'm sure some bozo will state that these things are "nothing" because they've been through a nor'easter, but I've been through both, and given my druthers, I'd take a nor'easter any day. And this one looks much worse than Betsy.

The Superdome will be open as a refuge of last resort for those with special medical needs only at 8 a.m. tomorrow. Citizens must call (504) 568-3200 to verify that they qualify for admittance to the shelter. Phone lines will be open beginning at 7 a.m.

Reports from an Air Force hurricane hunter aircraft indicate that the maximum sustained winds have increased to near 175 mph
...with higher gusts. Katrina is a potentially catastrophic category five hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Some fluctuations in strength are likely during the next 24 hours. No one should stick around for this one. Prayers for the protection of all in it's path.

The idea of using the Superdome as a shelter makes me wonder whether it can even stand winds of 175 MPH. Anyone know the wind loads it can withstand?

FoxNews:
Oil platforms in the gulf have not been secured. Oil company officials expect some of them to collapse.
Point being: We all are going to pay. Look for significant increases in gasoline, heating fuel, natural gas prices.
