Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

Agreed. What about food and water? 50,000 people in the Dome for how long? I wouldn't want to be responsible for trying to maintain order for that many hungry and thirsty people on a small island.

The spec sheet says 102 bathrooms (51 men, 51 women.) I don't know what kind of generators they have but it is not going to be pretty after 24 hours.

21 oil rigs were evacuated two days ago--long before Katrina reached Cat 5 status. Beyond that, how do you secure an oil platform against a storm like this?

Joe Bastardi on FoxNews just said that the brunt of this is likely to miss New Orleans to the east. Still, there will be some storm surge from Lake Pointchange (sic) and likely the city will be under some water - probably 10-15 feet - but not the catastrophe others are predicting.

Gulfport, MS is looking to get the brunt right now. Almost certainly a bigger storm than Camille and that is saying a lot.

It is....a fabulous city..I'll never forget he first time I was there..for Mardi Gras in l965. Drove down with three of my fraternity brothers from NYC..we got in about 8 at night..of course went out partying till all hours...had my first Hurricane..I woke early..went for a walk..in the old quarter...got a cup of coffee, and several aspirin..sitting there, then I happn to look up, and see this ...like..HUGE OIL TANKER going by about 50 feet OVER my head....WHOA!!!

POWER OUTAGES WILL LAST FOR WEEKS...AS MOST POWER POLES WILL BE DOWN AND TRANSFORMERS DESTROYED. WATER SHORTAGES WILL MAKE HUMAN SUFFERING INCREDIBLE BY MODERN STANDARDS.
