Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

they are claiming 72K may fit in the super dome.

Won't that be fun?! /sarcasm

I heard earlier that many of those in line are tourists from other countries and some of them don't speak any English. They couldn't leave because they had their flights canceled. Not a good time to be vacationing in NO!

"Cemetaries in N'awlins are above ground. Alot of flooding
and, well.. you know."

Flooding is the very reason the crypts are above ground.

Before the above ground burials they used to get corpses washing out of the ground every time it rained hard. Gruesome to consider, but that's the way it was.

The bodies are safer all encased in concrete and above ground.

Listening to most MSM tv, they seem to be loving this. Great for ratings. They don't have to exagerate for once.

This is a REAL danger.

TWC - the latest flight reported a minimum pressure of 903 mb. That's UP 1 mb from the last measurement.

That poor lady said she wanted to be inside the Dome, not outside and that she'd be ok when she gets in. I could only think -- I sure hope that's so.

Are they taking fingerprints or what down there? Why is it taking so long for people to get in? Surely they don't have this kind of wait when people come for a game.

Those folks could be cooped up together in possibly awful conditions for a long time. The last thing you need is a bunch of jerks getting in there with weapons. I imagine that concern is a big part of why it's taking so long.

Seem to imply that belongings are being checked and people wanded. I'm sure frustrating for the people in line, but probably a good idea since NO has one of the highest gun-related crime rates in the country.

The outer bands are sweeping over New Orleans now; this is a BIG storm, and I expect the tropical-storm force winds will precede the eye hitting land by many, many hours. Last NHC update said tropical storm (39+ mph) winds extended outward up to 210 miles from the center, though they didn't say which direction that was.

Thanks sweetie:)

Have you all noticed how the TONE of the reporters...on ALL the stations has suddenly become very sober..in..the last hour or so? Even listening to James Lee Witt just now on FOX..he's usually a very positive though realistic kind of fellow- he sounded whipped.

Yes, Janice Dean is the meteorologist.

And, I think I heard that the guy on Fox is the only reporter on the scene at the Superdome.

I wish there was something I could do; your agony is heartwrenching. Please keep reminding yourself that your Dad is not really in NO anymore. Heck, he's probably looking down on you and worrying about YOU. :-) ((((..hugs from all of us!..))))

How nice of Fox News to put on the VP of an energy TRADING company to fuel market hysteria on Monday. No vested interest on his part, no siree...

The markets in Asia will be opening shortly, will be interesting to see what how much the price of oil will rise overnight. And how much speculators will take advantage of this situation.
