Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

Per WWL--

All Plaquemines and southern Jefferson wet; 2.5 inches of rain per hour; expecting at least 20 ft storm surge; can't believe people still there; strong squalls moving through area; storm moving nnw; "strom will not miss us this time;" 15-20 inches of rain expected; pumps will be under water and useless; "we're talking about weeks not days for us to see water in town;" "we've run out of luck."

And all those people still stuck on the roads in their vehicles.

Frankly, the government should offer to take them. I am not much for govt. services etc., but this is one time the govt. needs to do it.

I hope churches are helping to evac homeless etc. as well.

I heard a story in Gulfport or Biloxi after Camille. Maybe it was an urban legend, but there were supposed to be a couple of Catholic priests who stayed through the surge flood in a very modernistic Catholic church near the beach. They climbed as high as they could on a statue, held on with both arms, and survived. This happened while shrimp boats were carried over the tops of 30 foot tall pine trees on Ship Island and wound up on the beach.

Can't let these folks get caught going westbound. The west bound exits out of New Orleans goes over a spillway between the lake and river. Having folks trapped on that span when this hits just would not do.

Mobile will be in the northeast quadrant. Most folks are talling about NO because of the flooding, but Mobile, I'm afraid, is going to get a pretty bad beating.

I can't, for the life of me, understand why they didn't do this. Tragic. Prayers for NO and all in path of the Hurricane; that this disaster-in-the-making will somehow be averted. Amen

They didn't say which way it was headed. It was a quick shot, it was pouring rain and there were a few cars heading towards the camera. Looked like it was a section of raised road or possible a bridge over a small river or so.
