Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

I wonder if that trend will continue, we were just talking about that a few pages back, they keep showing a due north move to landfall, but the satellite imagery keeps showing a westerly component to the movement.

My Aunt and Uncle and all my cousins did not leave until 8:30 am today. They are on i-10 and as of an hour ago had not made it to Baton Rouge.

I'm beginning to wonder how he got this gig instead of Whorealdo.

Me too. Do you think it was an order or did they ask for volunteers?

Sorry, leilani, about your family vault. Know how you feel. My grandmother is buried in Metarie too, but below ground. I'm totally devastated. She was the most-loved relative I ever had.

Per WWL--

All Plaquemines and southern Jefferson wet; 2.5 inches of rain per hour; expecting at least 20 ft storm surge; can't believe people still there; strong squalls moving through area; storm moving nnw; "strom will not miss us this time;" 15-20 inches of rain expected; pumps will be under water and useless; "we're talking about weeks not days for us to see water in town;" "we've run out of luck."

The bridges are now closed. There is no way out.

The govenor just said that its going to hit mid-morning so there's still time to get out. That sounds a little off to me.

They say that the danger in a tornado is the sudden change of pressure as the funnel tracks over a house. The house will inflate and blow its boards all over the yard like it has exploded. The hurricane might have the same wind, but the change in pressure isn't so intense. The danger from flying objects would be the same.

I'm visualizing the roof of the Superdome if the eye passes directly over it

Regardless of what you think of Shep, his reporting today has been pretty bad IMO - to say nothing about how stupid it is for him to drive down into this especially when there are Fox reports already there. He seems to be jealous of them in a sick way for being in the true "eye of the storm." Reporters will ask someone who's just been through something terrible, 'how do you feel.' Well I wasn't surprised that he would be told that and I thought it was about time for it. This is not right or wrong, it's my opinion!

Your post was unclear and it looked to me like you thought I was calling you an idiot (although "idiot" wasn't in MY post).

Unbelievable, however from what I am hearing they have no place to go other than thier hotels. The hotels are not putting them out because all of their flights were canceled and they are stick in NO. I pray for their safety. I might feel better in a steel construction hotel than the super "full of people" dome.

Did you here the "none of your f*$^ing business" comment from a party goer?

This is going to innoculate the placing of blame.
Proof all over the news today that people refused to leave, and those who did, did not appreciate being forced to go to shelters.
Stupid is as stupid does.
No way to spin this as "blame anybody but yourself for not heeding warning".

You look at the sat pics and it looks like this thing is effecting weather off the coast of NC right now.

Think of it this way, many people that went through it in southern FL when it was just a Cat 1, they said it was the worst Cat 1 they've sat through. A friend of mine Ft. Lauderdale sat in his area it felt more like a Cat 2 and it wasn't even that bad where he was at compared to other areas.

Now it's a Cat 5. I certainly hope God is with those that are stuck in N.O. and anyone else in the war path of this woman on the worst PMS fit ever.

Well, I'm less worried about terrorists than a bunch of rumpswabs with firearms, knives, whatever. Evacuations are stressful, and these folks could be cooped up together in awful conditions for quite a while. I would hope the authorities are being careful.

Janice Dean...the weather person on Fox just was saying it would happen earlier, like 4:00Am

THEN, she asked about the Superdome...she said she wishes she knew about its construction...and then hestitated, like she didn't want to say that she is not so sure it will withstand this storm....she seemed very reluctant to express opinion about that...scary!
