Grand Isle is due south of NO. NOT good!

Through all of this I hadn't even though of Grand Isle. I've just been thinking of the implications regards New Orleans. This storm could Grand Isle out. I haven't been there in years but remember it fondly. I spent much time there when I was young... much younger.

Just heard on the New Orleans station that it is speading up and tracking slightly west which is not good. Don't think the Weather Channel can even get into New Orleans now -- mandatory evacuation and they will arrest people on the street.

The Super Dome was always the only place to go. There are ten centers in NO where people can gather to catch a shuttle to the Dome.

I can't even imagine swimming in 63-degree water.

We do it all the time in the northeast! The water doesn't begin climing out of the 60s until at least August.

As I understand it, New Orleans sits mostly at or below sea level south of Lake Ponchartrain, between Lake Ponchartrain and the Mississippi River. If the eye comes ashore east of NO, the north-to-south winds will push the lake water over the levees and into New Orleans. The winds will be less, but the flooding may be greater.

I believe the true "nightmare scenario" was a hurricane passing close enough to New Orleans to push water from the sea onto land, then sort of "spin" it over into Lake Ponchartrain, *then* push the extra water into New Orleans. That would require the eye to pass very close to, but just east of, the city. Which might happen...it's too soon to tell.

The other thing to remember is that if the eye passes a little ways east of NO, that means that Biloxi, Pass Christian, Biloxi, Mobile, and other places in Mississippi and Alabama will get the worst of the wind and storm surge. We've all been rightfully worried about the Crescent City, but if the track forecasts are right, the coast in Mississippi and Alabama is going to be scoured clean.

I hope they have life insurance. I have a bad feeling about that dome.

On FOX they keep showing the huge crowd milling about the Superdome.

God help those poor people! You just know some of them are going to be victims of the storm and of the circumstances. Some of them aren't walking too well; some look mentally challenged.

God be with them.

Except for those reporters willing to accept suicide risk, most of them are leaving the NO metro area for safer locations. Even Jim Cantore said he was leaving his MS location for safer ground.

At some point will someone on FR post a thread of volunteer recovery efforts?

The American Mission Board of the Southern Baptists is a great contact for volunteering. They send out food trucks, chain saw crews, and others to assist. Check out your church associations if not a Baptist.

Red Cross and Salvation Army may be taking volunteers. There will be a need for anyone ready to help, even if you just pour coffee for the professional crews.

May God protect and bless you.

Suddenly earthquakes aren't as scary.

But we can run from hurricanes.

I'd be more scared of living in earthquake country.

Cat 5 hurricane and you're worried about football games? I guess they could always play the games further inland if the Superdome is destroyed. But frankly, it's low on my priority list right now and I am a huge NFL fan.
