Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

I think so yes. There is nothing but ninety degree water between Katrina and the shore. The storm should keep strengthening.

Sorry to be a dunce, can someone explain to me what "902MB" means? Thanks.

It's the pressure. Basically, from what I understand, the lower the pressure the more powerful the storm and the higher the windspeeds. The pressure on this storm has been steadily dropping, making it more powerful. I think the record low pressure is something like 890MB (but I could be wrong. I think I read that on the Eastern US Weather Forum).

We all choose our poisons and paradise locations as to where we live. No place in America is perfectly safe from anything. All we can do in the areas not affected is to pray, and provide what we can to those affected by this coming disaster. It's that kind of fabric that holds America together.

That said, hopefully this is the once in 500 years storm.

I don't believe the superdome can withstand the expected wind pressure. I think the sides and the entire structure will go.

The Weather Channel just reported maximum sustained winds of 184mph.

Peach, it sounds like the people staying at the Superdome can't really AFFORD a motel room, or even have a car they can hit the road in.

It's a shame they never made plans for a Mass evacuation, using public transportation and tent cities for these people to go to.

After the loss of life, they might do it...who knows.

The storm is a beast... I've never seen anything like it so close to land. It's annular now as well, so it probably won't go through another ERC before landfall. If you look at IR... you can see it trying to back the trough coming towards it. This is why people sometimes say theses things can create their own weather.

Yep, she has become her own engine now, and will go wherever she pretty much pleases.

The 902 is a gut punch. She has gone annular and is still deepening. I am really beginning to fear that she might starting pushing 200 tonight. God please no.

I have an employee that got a moving van and left Pensecola last year and moved his whole household. He endured his neighbors' jests. His whole blocke was wiped out upon his return.

It won't weaken much, for sure... we are about 18 hours out max now. Pray it jogs west into more unpopulated areas. If not, the day after Andrew will look like a good one.
