Rap mogul Marion "Suge" Knight was shot in the leg early Sunday during a party hosted by Grammy-winning hip hop artist Kanye West, police said.
Knight, 40, was hospitalized in good condition, police said. He was shot during a celebrity-studded party at the Shore Club, part of a celebration of the MTV Video Music Awards scheduled for Sunday night, said Miami Beach Police Officer Bobby Hernandez.
Sonja Mauro, a guest at the club, said a shot in the party's VIP section rang out shortly before 1 a.m.
"I was in there and I heard a pop and I ran out and got trampled," she said.
People attending the party began screaming and running for the doors, she said.
Knight co-founded the pioneering rap label Death Row Records and hit the charts in the 1990s with West Coast stars including Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur.
The label struggled when Knight was sent to prison for assault and weapons violations. He was released in 2001, then served 10 more months for violating parole and striking a Hollywood nightclub valet. Relatives of slain rapper Notorious B.I.G. have also accused him of involvement in his death, though police have never named Knight as a suspect.
Knight continues to operate his label, now called Tha Row.
Never heard of him. Then again I'm just an aging redneck rocker who still listens to The Who and Led Zeppelin.
Rap people and gun shots.......go figure!!!
It must be all about crafting a wholesome image.
Welshman have tempers when it comes to loyalty and oath. (fifth generation American BTW)
Given the reputation of his chosen profession this is hardly shocking. It continues to be scandalous and indicative of the wariness we should have with our youth's obsessiveness over that subculture's trappings, debased morals and use of violence.
Anyway, here's to a speedy recovery for ol' Suge.
Bit extreme, yes? How old was he anyway?
Ain't nothin' but a G thang, baaaaabay!
Two loc'ed out *****'s so we're craaaaazay!
Death Row is the label that paaaaays me!
Unfadable, so please don't try to fade this
BTW, what the hell is happening when he's getting shot at a KANYE WEST PARTY???
You know, the new Common-style college grad., not-a-gangster rapper, not-in-the-game good boy rapper?
Why did Kanye even invite Suge Knight? The guy has trouble spray painted all over him. He's actually one of the few rappers that ACTUALLY WENT TO JAIL. Plus, the Death Row label has been dead 10 years now.
He's on his way. I THINK our tough love approach maybe made the difference.
Then again parents are pretty stooopid aren't we? IMOHO
It is increasingly hard to take rap music artists and companies serious when this crap goes on.
Same here. I suppose I will have him struck from my memory bank before I finish typing th ...
Who was I talking about?
dunno much bout Suge Knight, but Kanye West is really good... He's conflicted sometimes in his music sometimes playing the hardcore gangsta rapper, sometimes the not so well adjusted (meaning needing Ben Sobel's talents) gangsta), just listen to "Jesus Walks" and see what I mean (I'm not here to argue about his facial features but to convert atheists into believers)
..we at war, we at war with terrorism, we at war with racism... most of all, we at war with ourselves...
Suge Knight is trouble. I believe it was him that held Vanilla Ice off a (very high) balcony by his feet. He's had scandal and drama linked to him for a very long time.
I miss the Sugarhill Gang, the Funky Four Plus One and Digital Underground!
I remember the early 70's. My father went on a rampage when he heard my older brother playing a woodstock album. They "came to terms" after my father took the album and broke it into a zillions peices in front of him. My father had been promoted as one of the youngest officers in Korea in order to build a bridge they needed. He didn't take kindly to the song "One, two, three...".
My bro was wild, but he turned out to be close to the genius my father was. Went on later to help design programming for the B1 or B2 bomber. Don't remember exactly now, will have to ask him. Yes, he turned out conservative and one of the most decent people I know on the planet.
Feel the love!
