Hurricane warnings have been issued for the north central Gulf Coast from Morgan City Louisiana eastward to the Alabama/Florida border...including the city of New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain.
A Tropical Storm Warning and a Hurricane Watch have been issued from the Alabama/Florida border eastward to Destin Florida...and from west of Morgan City to Intracoastal City Louisiana.
Lord love you, my FRiend.........
She looked more impressive on the IR an hour ago than she did about a half hour ago. Is she going through eyewall replenishment?
The official projection track and some of the models have shifted ever so slightly to the east. If I were in Vegas I'd bet that it will eventually shift a bit more east, probably hitting the mouth of the Miss. River and coming in near Gulfport, MS. That would likely be just far enough east to avoid the worst case scenario in New Orleans. Like Georges, but an even closer call this time.
But I am NOT a meteorologist.
Ping to the new storm thread.
Say hello, you are both the same age and young mothers.
Thanks for the update(s)..this is becoming mind-boggling.
The mayor of NO is even more incompetent than the governor. He says he is having someone research his power to order an evacuation, even though it has been ordered in every other parish around. He is hiding behind legalisms. In dire emegencies, one doesn't consult lawyers. He worries about the ill not being given a hospital bed and the tourists having their hotels shut down. He hasn't figured out that fleets of buses should have been ordered into NO to pick folks out, and trains sent in for folks to get into cattle cars to move north. He wrings his hands knowing that NO is likely to be a death zone, and under water, with nothing alive except in third story buildings and above, assuming they survive the winds. A tragedy is in the making, a great tragedy, unless mother nature does something unexpected.
Weather channel just reported a 3 millibar drop in pressure since the 11 pm warning. And 34 foot high wave heights in Northeast quadrant near the center. It's still intensifying. IF the NO mayor waits till morning. Pray for the souls that remain or are simply to late to get out.
Thanks for the ping, Nauti
Had to come to work this morning, but pans are to have everything shutdown before noon and then a crew of 6 to remain behind in reinforced office buildings.
No traffic on Airline Hwy in LaPlace when I was leaving for work (4:30 am), but traffic was getting thick in a short amount of time coming out of the NO direction.
I'll be headed out on the back roads towards Alexandria then towards Shreveport with boat in tow. Hopefully I can pick up a generator @ Home Depot for my trip back home. I know we're going to be without power for a few weeks, maybe more. Need to keep my fish frozen.
Check in a little later when I get some equipment secured.
STAY SAFE!
Yet ANOTHER reason to be grateful for FR!
I've been watching Fox & CNN & WXchannel all morning and had any number of questions about some of the things I was seeing.
THANKS...for clarifying why all those cars on I-10 seemed to be stopped in the far left lane...while the other lanes were whipping by. (those folks are lined up to go east...everyone else is going north or west....)
THANKS...for explaining why the Superdome would be considered a refuge if the whole city is underwater (it's on a hill)
THANKS...for simple explanations of historic low pressure levels, storm surges, and wind velocities. (175 mph....I can't even imagine it)
I'm far inland & have never been anywhere near a hurricane. Thanks to you all for educating me up. FR is a great resource!!
