Hurricane warnings and watches are posted. Hurricane Katrina continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Mexico. The forecast models continue to converge upon New Orleans. However, all interests in the northern Gulf of Mexico should follow the path of this very large and dangerous storm, and be prepared for a major hurricane landfall. There have been reports of coastal animals leaving in droves for higher ground. Meanwhile, New Orleans continues to suggest that residents evacuate.

They should put things in the hand of that military guy in the background over these people.

God Bless all those down there.

Looking at weather updates, and hurricane warnings, hard to fathom from Midwesterner's point.

God speed, all of you down there.

Prayers sent.

I just gave away my copy of a book about M*A*S*H to my brother.

Gridlock. What a mess.

Well someone had to do it! But how shocking is it that Bush had to pull the trigger on this. What kind of public officials are they dealing with down there? Yikes. Col's up now to talk about traffic.

And she also looked like she was ready to cry. She's in way over her head.

She is quite the simpleton, isn't she?

That's an understatement. Forrest Gump would have handled this better.

FWIW I mentioned the hurrican Thursday to a co-worker and he scofed at the small size of it and said it'll hit Georgia-Florida and not us.

Looking at the path, few would thave thought NO would get sacked on Friday. Hell, my job involved repairing utilities post-storms and my boss didn't even put us into storm mode till Saturday. My truck normally shoudl be fueled and parked on high ground for post-storm repair. Now it's sitting in it's usually low spot almost out of gas because no one else had a key.

Either way I'll be working 12 hr days for 13 days straight (1 day off every 14th day per union regs or penalty pay) for the next month.

"Do they think they can survive 10 weeks in a high rise building?"

no electricity .. no AC, no elevator, probably windows that don't open .. not a good scenario.

He was by a hotel and guess it's some kind of seawall or something. I saw waves spilling a bit over the edge. Spilling a bit now but later will be a few feet under probably!

Weather going to get bad around 5:00 today. Can't imagine sitting in gridlocked traffic, in the rain and wind, worrying.

I got the distinct impression that if Bush had not called, they would not have ordered a mandatory evac.

Thanks for keeping the threads.

I will certainly monitor throughout the day.

One of my students from last school year's class has family in New Orleans.

Oh--you mean there is more to being a governor than cocktail parties and social engagements?

Okay, these people are real eggheads, the first feeder bands are coming on shore and now they demand mandatory evacuations?

I am just sick. We are going to witness the worst natural disaster in American history and there's not a damn thing we can do about it.
