Hurricane warnings and watches are posted. Hurricane Katrina continues to strengthen in the Gulf of Mexico. The forecast models continue to converge upon New Orleans. However, all interests in the northern Gulf of Mexico should follow the path of this very large and dangerous storm, and be prepared for a major hurricane landfall. There have been reports of coastal animals leaving in droves for higher ground. Meanwhile, New Orleans continues to suggest that residents evacuate.

"My houseguests from Houston are supposed to be leaving today. Maybe I'll just follow them home. Of course, the normally 4-hour drive will probably take 20 hours with all the traffic."

You'd be wise to do so. I think the forecasters are off on the timing of the landfall. All week I kept waking up at 4a.m. Something about early a.m. when people are "generally" asleep. Keep your weather alert radios near by, the kind that go off like an alarm clock.

Damn the lawyers win either way it goes.

They will get clients one way or another.

They will never be able to do it. When I spoke with my sister yesterday (lives in MS/works in LA) she said they still had guys out doing construction on the I10/610 connection. She said it was making the traffic flow a real mess. I mean come on! These guys are out there laying asphalt and it won't even be there on Tuesday!

Hope the mayor has enough grave sites to put people afterwards. Stupid, stupid, stupid!

"It's a bit scary"

yes, it really is. Those poor people, I can only pray for them, too far away to offer shelter.

mayor was talking to lawyers to see if he has the legal authority to evacuate the city. But he's evacuated his own family.

What does a mandatory evacuation look like? Round folks up at gunpoint and load them on cattle cars? Not a wisecrack, in line with my recently announced policy on this thread.

What does the mayor actually DO under a mandatory evacuation. And why is he waiting until 10:00?

FWIW, the 06Z GFDL has made the largest shift of a respectable model in the last 24 hours...not a very large one in the typical grand scheme of things, but it misses NO to the east and hits central Mississippi.....

Peach, people aren't going to make it out. Tropical wind & rain coming in this afternoon with bumper to bumper traffic.

Then we have those who are clueless about their "fate", who will stay on..shudder.

Looting seemed to be a major concern with the Mayor..LOL. It's all going to be floating anyway. WTH should anyone care about "stuff"?

Think they will try to reclaim and rebuild or just establish the resultant mud flats as a memorial?
May god rest their souls.

Shades of Titanic passengers who said, "they've been on many cruises before and this never happens."

So what do YOU really think? Is it a direct hit to New Orleans, and are we being alarmists?

That's a very sobering thought. I'm off to go to walk and go to church. Let's all pray because that's all we really have.

"Sadly, some people are that stupid and wait for authorities to tell them what to do."

Unfortunately there is a political party comprised of these types of people which is dragging our country down.

As for the mayor and Governor of LA, this hurricane is showing us power plus all the perks instead of leadership and service was their motivation to run for office.

Pray for intense weakening today, tonight and tomorrow (Also pray people pick better leaders).

Why wait an hour? Say what you have to say now!

He's prolly waiting for the engines to warm up, and all his possessions to be loaded onto his flight out of Dodge immediately following the presser.
